is that the normal heater for a santana then? looks better than the standard 3 one

Yes this is the factory heater. The former owner of this truck was a complete ass, I am sure he had not made any improvements. I am amazed to hear that this is better than original LR heater!

I am going to try your method and see if reversing the pipes would improve anything.

worth a try, must drain that car sometime before all the crud makes its way round the system and goes into the core from the other side
