hello, I am seeking advice on options for replacement alternators.
Currently have 2.5 N/A 12j diesel engine with what I believe to be a standard alternator fitted (has a plate with a133-55 stamped on) probably the original knowing my luck so far.

The options, as I see them, stand as:
1) replace like for like - as I am currently having some problems with the charging system and this seems to be one of the issues.
2) replace with a more powerful option (greater amperage return) - this is to account for future adaptations of split charge system and additional items requiring power. However these have yet to be realised.

Suggestions to cover both options would be greatly appreciated.

Regards, Carl.

hi Carl
Original lucas 127 or 133 alternators came in a vast range of outputs from 35 up to 90 amps from memory. Yours may have a standard 3 pin plug plus a single "W" terminal, which has internal voltage regulator machine sensed There is loads of space to fit any alternator which fits same side of engine as yours. Might be problematic if you go over 65 amp tho as generally they use multi ribbed belts for such hi outputs. If you want to keep it looking standard they did do a high output version for models with aircon rated at 65 amps which would be plenty unless you fitted loads of none standard things drawing heavy current

I tried to get my original 35 amp alternator rebuilt, but no parts were easily available in Canada.
I upgraded to a generic 65 amp unit (same as used on backhoes and other tractor type things) with no issues. I'm moving to a two battery system with a split charger and an AC voltage converter running off the second battery. I have also changed all of the lights to LED to reduce demand on the electrical system.
Good luck.

Thanks Chase, certainly along the lines of where I thought of going.
Did the LED conversion significantly reduce the load on the primary battery?
Thanks again and good luck

c-alex,
To be honest I didn't measure the load before I installed the led's. There were a bunch of wiring issues to be sorted and some of the original lights needed to be replaced, so I went for a complete changeover.
What I do appreciate is the increased brightness that the LED's provide.
I even installed a third brake light, a couple of rear work lights and a second rear fog light.

Have you checked the electrical system? It needs a service, also your battery might be on its way out, what voltage is your alternator putting out?
