Hi,

My reliable defender 90 is fine...its my Ford C-max thats the problem!!

This afternoon at 70mph in lane 3 of the M4 it stopped....basically lost all power, when I managed to stop on the hard shoulder it was surrounded by plumes of white smoke and oil outside the exhaust. Brilliant service from the AA (worth every penny) and I am now home safe.

Questions:

1) Does it sound like a turbo failiure?
2) Will my engine be likely to be fooked? (No oil in it anymore!!)
3) It is 4.5 yrs old and has 79k, will Fords help me out of warranty (I know the answer!!!!)

Thanks in advance.....

Ah... sorry. 2 litre deisel. TDCI.

I have read a few other forums and turbo seems likely.

Who knows.....im going into Fords tomorrow.

That's your turbo gone.

About 5 years ago i had the same..... power gone, loads of white smoke, oil out the exhaust.

was the car due for an oil change?
I had to clean all the pipe work on mine and fit a new turbo, expensive job, but at the time I was in Portugal and knew all the right people.

your turbo is probably now doing this... [ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n262T1Uo63I&feature=related"]YouTube - T25 shaft play[/ame]
and also sideways..

I know most people dont do it, but in all turbo cars is worth waiting a couple of minutes after long trips before switching off the engine, however most people turn the key off as soon as they stop.
What they are doing is risking the turbo spinning on dry as the oil stops going through...
If you wait a couple of minutes the turbo will stop and then you can stop the engine.

On my old car I had a straight through 60mm pipe and I could hear the tone of the exhaust changing when the turbo stoped... then, was safe to switch off.

very true,to many people just turn the engine off,it should be in the owners handbook to say that after a long or hard drive that the engine should be left to idle for a few minutes to allow the turbo to cool down and not be starved of oil.:eek:

I have heard that advice too. Mine went at 70mph on the M4 after 2.5 solid hours driving!

I am hoping I got the engine off in time. Only done 79k miles but 4.5 yrs old do Fords dont want to know......

Dont count on it...
if you had white smoke out the exhaust, and oil as well....

your turbo is gone.
as soon as that white smokes starts coming out...thats your turbo gone as the play on the shaft lets the oil get through, then burning in the engine....making the white smoke.
