Pumping oil uphill

In the past I've used those nasty red plastic bulbs on a stiff tube that you put into the oil and a flexi that goes to the gearbox etc.. They're rubbish though, and I threw the last one away when I moved sheds.

I don't want to spend a fortune, but the car I need it for has the smallest of gaps around the various gearboxes, diffs etc. and I've only got axle stands for clearance.

Any ideas? Trawling through web search results seems to give either megabucks powered jobs, rotary pumps for big oil barrels or vacuum devices which are for emptying rather than filing. If anyone has one - can you just flip the washer like you would in a bike pump and make it pump t'other way?

YEP - I had this problem and I was to tight to buy an oil pump so I went to B+Q and brought a verve garden pressure sprayer cheap, holds about 5l

I chopped the spray nozzle off the end of the pipe, then using a lighter carefully warmed the plastic tube so it would bend (careful not to collapse the inside diameter) and formed the end into a very shallow ‘hook’ shape.

Fill with the relevant oil, put the hook end in the fill plug, pump up the pressure then squeeze the handle - it takes a while as it’s only meant to move water but it moves the oil fine - maybe 10mins to pump a couple of litres.

So I use a small clamp to clamp the handle trigger down and do other things while it’s filling the box.

Total cost about £10, worked so well I brought 2 one for ep80/90 and one for auto box fluid.

I was worried about the seals being eaten or the plastic failing but the bottles are still fine 4/5 years later. If they fail I will just buy again

Perfect, why didn't I think of that?! I trip over a garden spray every time I use the back door.

Slow is fine - gives me the chance to lie there and contemplate the difference between Solihull and Milanese rusts.

Solihull rust is cheaper to fix.
