Hello from Izmir Turkey to all the LR fans. It's a pleasure to be here.

Roads here in Turkey are :mad: so in November 2005 year we changed my wife's car to a Freelander TD4 2006 model. She was reluctant at first, having driven a VW Polo up until then :eek: but is now a total convert :p . Occasionaly I get to drive it :cool: . Now has 23,000 km on the clock, about 14,300 miles in real money.

Other evening after parking up outside the house and turning off the ignition I heard what sounded like a high frequency whining noise coming from the engine compartment. Sure enough, on getting out the car the noise was quite audible but stopped on its own about 30 seconds later.

Have driven the car on a quite few other occasions since then and have only heard it a couple of times, always stopping on its own.

Sounds like a sticky pump or motor to me but I am no expert, thus, over to you guys....any ideas?
 
Sounds like it's the electric fan - it's normal for it to run on after switching off if the engine is hot. It should switch itself off after a minute or two.
It would be worth checking your coolant level (when the engine is cold) as shown in your drivers handbook.

is it cold there smiles. . . .no not a joke its jist that is possible that its ya fbh [fuel burn heater] as they are known to make this type noise or like trew sis ya fan. . . .:)
 
Cold? Well yes it is by Izmir standards. Normally this time of year we get temperatures down to about 8/9 degreesC at night. Cooler tonight though, around about 3/4 degrees, it never freezes.

Interesting what you say though, it only seems to manifest itself at night, when it is cooler, although saying that it could just be the background noise is less, so I am more able to hear.

Anyway I will check out the coolant level tomorrow but suspect it to be OK, otherwise I will check out the combination of occurrence and cool weather. I assume therefore that you are saying it is normal and not to be concerned :) ?

Freelander 2 arrives in Turkey this month and was considering getting one, any horror stories or pitfalls from current users that I haven't heard about or missed?

next time it appens look under the passengers wheel un see if you can see smoke [that where the exhaust for the heater is] . . .:)
 
Definately a Fuel Burning Heater. I was a little worried when the thing first kicked in on my car, loads of smoke out from under the front lhs wing. When I contacted Land Rover they explained what it was and said that is what comes with buying a high quality vehicle. I bet there is quite a lot of Freelander owners that would disagree with that. Checked on the forum after the first incident and there is quite a lot of info on this peice of kit.

Kicks in at below 5deg C (I think). Warms the engine and car up quicker than without a fbh. Shame it doesnt tell you about this sort of thing in the owners manual.
 
It was me who had (and still have) that specific "unwinding noise", in another thread (unwinding noise) I posted a link towards a video I made and where you can hear the kind of noise I have, does yours sound similar ?? (Note you have to hear it with the hood open, as otherwise it's not at all 'that' loud).

Not the same noise Willo. The noise from mine is a high pitch whine audible even from inside the car after you switch the ignition off and running at the same level for about 30 seconds or so. It is not a loud noise but you can certainly hear it if you have normal hearing.
It's my wifes car but I have been driving it in the evenings recently and have not heard anything untoward.
Next time I do I will certainly get the bonnet up as soon as possible and try to track down the source.

Mine switch off when the engine switch off but mine is KV6. should it be keep running if the engine is hot? how do I check whether the sensor is ok. I know the sensor is ok because the fan will run if engine is running and hot unless there are two separate sensors.
 
Hi It'll be the FBH mines the same as said put your hand underneath the front wing just infront of the front wheel R/H side when looking from the front of the car. If it's cold when you first start it up, let the engine run for a couple of minutes then feel and you should feel hot exhaust from the little pipe about 15mm diameter. You may be able to smell the fumes whilst engine is cold smells a bit like fumes from a parrafin heater
 
I've just taken my freelander 2 2010 in, with similar symptoms they diagnosed a dodgy throttle body.
(Whatever that is) said if I didn't get it fixed the throttle could get stuck on and you wouldn't be able to stop the car.......! Nice
