Tried the battery drill, but no joy - didn't seem to have enough power to make the pump work. Then I tried a 650W mains drill with variable speed control, and tried controlling the speed so that it wouldn't trip the inverter, but no luck again. Either the drill pump doesn't work, or I'm just not getting enough spin on it.

Since I needed to get fuel in, I decided to try the little bilge pump, assuming it would take ages. As it turned out, it didn't - tank was just under 1/4 full, and it was filled in no more than 5 minutes. Not a very ínstalled' setup, but tolerable enough.

The pump looks like this...

...but I think mine has 400 written on it (bought about 10 years ago). If mine did 8 gallons in 5 minutes, that's more like 96 gallons per hour. It wasn't pumping horizontally, but lifting about 1m out of the water butt, and through a 7m hose.
