Hi everyone

I’m going to clean my fuel tank for debris before changing the fuel filter.

But, do I have to take out the whole tank or is it possible to go through the compartment..

Have a nice day greetings from Sweden

Hi Alex,
You don't say if it's petrol or diesel, metal or plastic/GRP or what year it is.
However, if you can borrow an intrinsically safe high capacity electric pump (12V preferably), you should be able to remove the sender unit and hoover everything out through there, to be collected in a small-neck gallon or so container.
Be extremely careful of anything that might create a static spark as the fumes could be extremely volatile, and I would suggest that you purge the tank with an inert gas throughout!
Just to be on the safe side, if you don't have access to the pump, gas or container, leave it well alone!!
Greetings from England

Hi Oldseadog.
Thanks for the reply, really appreciate it.
She is a Defender PUMA 2.4 tdci from 2008, and the tank is made op HDPE.
My Buddy has a electric pump (12V ) so we are able to suck all the dirt out of her, before changing the fuel filter.
Read somewhere that because of the location on the breeder hose, dirt comes in via vent pipe beneath the rear wheel arch.
If there is way to get in through the loading area via a inspection lock, maybe i could go through the fuel filler hose.

Hope you understand my english, i really did my best ;-)

Greetings

Hi Alex
Quite a number of Land Roverers cut an inspection hatch through the tub floor, which gives access to the sender unit on top of the tank. It is an easy enough job to do.
My question now is, how come you have the breather pipe loose in the wheel arch when it should go to a short piece of pipe near the top of the fuel filler tube (which is also routed through the wheel arch)?
Without the breather going to the filler tube you are allowing dirt to enter the tank from two different places!
However, gaining access to the whole area inside the tank from the filler tube would be difficult if not impossible!
There may be others on this forum who have done the operation successfully, and it would be good if one or two could jump in to share their experiences.
Have a good day.

Thanks again Oldseadog.

Was actually thinking of cutting out for an inspection hatch.

It must be the easiest way, and thinking of the future, I probably will
