Puma 2.2 used market

Hi all,

I am looking to take the plunge and get myself a 2012/13 defender 90 xs station wagon. It will be my first defender. Will be my daily driver for short commutes and trips out into the countryside. My budget is max £30k

My question is, I have been looking online at all the usual places and have found that there are quite a few vehicles that look very nice but have been on sale for 2,3 or even 4 months. I haven’t gone to see any of these vehicles yet so there could be a very good reason for them still being for sale, but can anyone tell me what the state of the market for these vehicles is at the moment?

I think that pretty much sums it up, people have twigged there are shed loads of the things so there is never going to be any shortage for a few decades yet.

Have you driven one yet? they are er different!

Even a nice 12/13 plate will have issues that will need tlc.

happy to proceed though if I get to try something, have some fun and lose very little/no value.
Is the common consensus now then that these may start to drop in value? Perhaps as now the new ones (albeit very different beasts) are now available?

Yes I’ve driven one and dont mind them to be honest, my commute is quite short.
I was looking at the discovery 4 too but have read horror stories about reliability and the expense involved in repairs.

I think , that is where you will get unstuck. IMHO, Unless it is one of the last ones and has that cache, then it is just another Defender, and even then having looked under a few "newer" ones they can suffer from the tin worm very badly.

Delivery mileage very late models are holding good money, but then they are being purchased by people who can afford to hold on them.

Im not really looking for an investment vehicle as such, just something I could own for a few years, enjoy and then not lose much when I came to sell it on. Strong current prices suggest that would be the case?

Tricky question I know but if I was to purchase an immaculate, no rot, low mileage 90 xs station wagon with full LR service history for say, £27k, how much do you think I could expect to get for it after 3 years of enjoyment? Enjoyment wouldn’t include trashing it and I would continue the LR service history

Thats where you will spend all your money and lose out. All your "investment" will be lost on enormous garage bills .

Not necessarily. I paid 25.5k for mine at 11 months old. I can do my own maintenance at a fraction of the cost of a LR dealer. It has cost me a few bob over the years for odd parts (its now 7 years old) but no more and possibly less than a "normal" car. I would have to pay at least the same to replace it with an identical model with same mileage. But if I sold it I would expect to get a few grand less than the dealers selling price. Same as any car, the only people who make money on them is dealers.

So, if I were to get one privately, do as much of the maintenance myself as I can, there should be no reason not to get a puma with low miles and enjoy for a few years without worrying about depreciation any more than the average car?

I reckon in years to come the ones that will be worth or more likely to hold onto their money/value are the very early 90/110s and the basic ones, 200 and especially 300/td5 station wagons.
I think the puma ones are looked at by land rover owners as the modern series 3, people like them but not like they did the earlier cars.

Even if it loses value it will not lose value anything like a normal car.
I would say they are like boats, even old ones hold their money so long as right spec and in good condition.

Quick example, 1993 90 bought 9 yrs ago for 4.3k and today still worth pretty much the same, a normal car would have been weighed in for peanuts a few years back.

Also wrong time of year to buy one as the weather closes in, prices will remain firm for next 6 months.

good advice. I’m in no rush so happy to wait until spring next year. Do you think the new defenders will effect the value of the current ones? I always thought that part of the reason the values are so high is that because they stopped making them. Now they are again (albeit very different).

Any thoughts?

The last of them increasing prices was all hype and lots of people fell for it.

Cant see the new ones making any difference tbh, they are totally different market and price to the old shape.

Why not look at the TD5 XS as well, we just bought a very nice 2005 XS SW for under £15k

The TD5 is more likely to hold on to its value, particularly if you can get one at under £15,000

Ours has had a couple of issues to sort out, but l expected some work.
