Hi,

I have a 1989 landrover 90 2.5 td. Last October I was getting a constant battery light on so ran through the usual checks but turned out to be a faulty alternator, it was less than a year old.

In the last few weeks I’ve started getting issues again. No problem when im accelerating but once its warmed up (seems to be fine for the first few miles in the morn) I get a pulsing light when lifting off the throttle even say at 40 mph…it pretty much stays on when im stationary. I am getting odd readings from the battery i.e 16.4/ 17 then down to -.1..was always just under 13 with 14/14.5 on tick over. Ive got a new meter coming as its well used.

I’ve changed all the connections from the alternator back. Battery was new just over a year ago, as I say alternator was new in oct last year as is the alternator plug. Fan belt seem tight enough…I tightened to be sure but no change.

Its been suggested to increase the throttle idle which I will do at the weekend but when I had a quick go by hand last night it just made the pulsing faster…when I got it fast enough top stop the light im sure it was revving far too much to be a good idle speed

Any ideas?

Many thanks in advance

If it starts ok (i.e the battery is ok) and you are truly getting 16/17 volts then your alternator regulator is duff. Change it now otherwise it will kill your battery and shorten the life of your bulbs and radio.

Thankyou both, I'll will whip it off and send back..again! Increased the idle today but did no good so put it back as was. I'll let you know how it goes.. Thanks

Hi, as you suggested alternator was shot, replaced part under warranty and just refitted... readings back to normal...2nd one to only last 9 months so fingers crossed on this one...anything on car that could be burning it out? Could you suggest a better replacement? (these are new britpart stc229 alternators)

Agreed, however he has asked for better makes that B/Part as he has replaced it twice already. Unfortunately quality appears to be a 'get what you pay for' situation and the bearings probably won't be a quality make either.

True bearings on cheap stuff from the far east tend to be made from some sort of sugar coated soft cheese. :D

Buy cheap buy twice!! thankyou, exactly what I was looking for, I'll try and find a lucus if this one goes.. unfortunately b/part was all they stocked and all I could find with the well known online parts suppliers...uprating sounds like the way forward..

Thanks for all the advice

Regards

I have a similar problem with mine 1988 2.5td ( 200tdi ) but it only pulsates on idle, its been doing this for just over 12 months now i have replaced the alternator and replaced the regulator about 3 times and it still does it but charges ok i have cleaned all my earth straps and added other's aswell but no joy, i intend doing a chassis swap for early next year and hopeing to sort it then as i think its to do with a partially rotten chassis
