Sorry to ask what may be a dumb question but..... Is it safe to plug/unplug BeCM connectors with the battery still connected as long as ignition is OFF?

Depends on which connectors. As long as it's not any of the 3 main power feeds, or the main ground feed you should be fine.

In fact there's parts of the BECM SID which mention about disconnecting various things to narrow down battery drain issues, with a multimeter/ammeter connected.

If you're worried about it, pull the battery off. But generally - as long as the ignition is OFF, and nothing is under load (eg headlights on and things like that) then you should be fine.

If you did it with the ignition on, then you might get a few weird things happen as the logic board is expecting various things to happen on inputs (when they change state for example) and pulling the connector with it on will sometimes show as a change in state. But with ignition OFF, you should be OK.

I never recommend doing things like putting the battery back on with the key in ignition II, as that will introduce a sudden load of things like ABS pump and HEVAC blowers along with various other things - and connecting/disconnecting under heavy load is never advisable.

As others have said though... if in doubt... disconnect it
