Just bought my wife a 2003 Disco 2 with the facelift TD5 XS Auto with only 68 000 km on the odo ( South Africa spec). Lovely vehicle, someone seems to have fitted a long range tank as I filled her up on Friday afternoon and she took 115 litres. One little thing is bothering us - on the move she has plenty power but on pull offs from dead stops I may as well get out and push. We are in Johannesburg ( Altitude approx 1700 metres) and I know Turbo Diesels are notorious for their lag but this actually is dangerous. Can't pull out into traffic and it is very frustrating- any ideas ???

I tried pushing my TD5 the other day, it's bloody heavy!

Blanking the EGR may help, as will changing the air filter and cleaning the intercooler... search it out, it's all on here. These jobs help more under boost though.

De-cat exhaust, replace middle exhaust silencer with a through pipe might help and it will sound better toooo

Try this - should explain better

Looks like you'll have to do the "yankee" style start in yr auto - foot on brake, give it some revs and release. Hopefully the TC will stop wheel spin and stop you looking like a real *******
That's really interesting. Thanks. That said, I haven't noticed much difference in my TDi and it's been pretty high. Is this why the Yanks don't bother with turbos on their very few diesels?

Hallo Nick,
I'm in Pretoria and I also experience the same. I've kinda gotten used to it now. The boost kicks in around 2000rpm and then she takes off but my life she feels sluggish up until then. You either floor it and hope you can enter the traffic or wait a while for a suitable gap. Sometimes in the morning it feels like she will never get to boost rpm!! She's due a 220k service soon and I don't know if the intercooler has ever been flushed so I'll do it plus all the other routine maintenence things to see if it helps.

Hi. Turns out we have all sorts of other problems that started showing themselves yesterday afternoon. The vehicle developed a miss and began running like a truck, much less power although you could still feel the turbo boosting in the upper rev range. Took it into the dealer this morning who says its a common problem with the TD5 called oil ingress whereby the injectors carry oil/ diesel into the ECU . Apparently the only way to fix it is to replace entire engine harness and injector harness at a cost of R 15 000-00. i have owned the vehicle for 5 days and am not overly impressed. If this is a known problem that is apparently repaired with the new injector harnesses not allowing this seepage why didn't landrover recall all TD5 and replace the injector harness. i have been told by a specialist that 9 out of 10 times you can get away with just replacing the injector harness and cleaning the engine harness. Greater reduction in cost. Also advised to block off the EG valve and vacuum that runs to it to give more power although I am sure with partially blocked injectors performance ill be understandably compromised.

open the battery compartment under the bonnet and take out the jack. in there is the engine ECU, un plug it take it out (1 screw) and clean the oil off the plug with WD40, rags and air..

good for another 6 months..!

Excellent, thanks for the advice. Luckily the guy I bought it from is about to pick it up and replace the entire injector harness, tappet cover gasket ( necessary i believe) and will block off the EGR as advised all at his cost as i have only had it for such a short time. Will definitely keep it in mind for the future though.

Sounds like you got a decent guy there - half the battle especially if he's a service guy (for the future). Let us know how you got on, ok?
