Hi All,

I finally got my winch going last night! I thought it was the control cable in the engine bay which had siezed up, but it turns out it was the wing top control levelers. Anyway, they're all freed up now, so I've tidied up the cable, and she's ready to go..... not sure where yet - but she's ready :)

So, my problem now is that it seems the old control levers which poke out of the top of the wing have either rusted or snapped off. You can still operate the "stumps" using a pair of mole grips, but obv it's a PITA.

Does anyone know where I could buy some new control levers - or old ones for that matter? Is it a 'weld them back onto the stumps' sort of job, or would I have to take the wing unit out and renew a lot of stuff?

you can just about see the stumps (and gators?) in the top right of this picture... The red cable is the control cable to the controls inside the cab.

The levers should simply screw in. Give them a weeks worth of spraying with a penetrating fluid such as 'plus gas' before attempting to do anything and then try unscrewing em with a pair of mole grips. If you can't get a good enough grip one em, grind 2 flats into them so you can get a spanner on em or a better grip with said mole grips.

If yer flush you can buy the levers from recovery truck manufacturers such as Dysons in Droitwich or TRS in Bristol. You should be able to get em from superwinch in devon too. I personally would buy some bar and cut it to size and then thread it myself.

Had a more detailed look at the controls today - I can't get the faceplate off the top of the wing, as some muppet painted over the allen key screws, which were probably already rusted tight. Anyway, the main control level (winch in, winch out) is not a screw in type. from what I can see, it's a square bar which is attached to 2 linages with pins which go through the square bar - looks like a bigger job :(

If I ever manage to get the faceplate off, I'll update the thread with a more detailed photo.

The good news is they should just be standard type hydrualic valve blocks so should be easy to come by if you need to buy the whole blocks.
