Can anyone tell me what size u.j's ah need for the front prop on me 1991 Defender 110 200tdi?
I've 2 sets sitting in front of me right now, one set is corresponding to RTC3458 (no grease nipples and smaller than the other ones)
and the other set corresponding to RTC3346 (with grease nipples)

Some have nipples an some dont. Got mine from local motor factors with nipples. Have a look at the crossy bit if you havent all ready there may be the threaded hole for a nipple an the nipples have got lost.

Just had another look Grunt, and deffo no holes or nipples. dunno if it's worth askin' back at the shop to see if there's any with thum? Just had a google moment and seen sum with and sum without, and sumone suggests that they should have nipples as their ones 'without' lasted no time!
 
dint mention uj nipple to me young man! i just did me jag ones greased them up before i fitted the shaft then went to redo them after a few miles and found i'd stuck them on so yer can't get to them.. **** or what?

Just lookin' at the back of the box and it says summit aboot "fit lubricator boss facing towards centre of shaft", don't suppose ah've got tae wurry aboot that if ah've nae nipples:p ;) :D
 
and ah was so chuffed ah dint lose no needle rollers aswell. now am gonna have to do them all again when i get around to whipping rear sirpenshun orf
 
Just a warning on size. Old & new propshafts are interchangeable, so don't rely on the parts book, its not unknown for Land Rovers to have older/newer parts fitted.

Aye, still got the other bigger set (with nipples) just now, They were supposed tae go back yesterday and missed the shop again today:rolleyes: ;) :D
Looks like ah'll have tae wait and see what one's actually fit....... if ah can find someone tae show me what to do;) :D
 
first off remove circlips, you might need to butcher them out as they may be rusted in place.


hold yer joint in yer left hand with one of the shaft yokes at the top, then tap the yoke lightly wiff a soft hammer. this some times works

but in the real world they are usually well siezed in there, so find a socket that fits in the yoke hole and rest the yoke on the socket , now **** the yoke downward over the socket. the top UJ cap should now appear.
now you should be able to remove that cap.
next up **** the cross down to push out the opposite cap, yer can now remove the shaft from the flange.
repeat fer the other half.
check fer excess wear and or cracks in the yokes.


yer now have to half fill the caps with grease, this helps hold the rollers in place so they dint end up on the floor.

stick the UJ in the yoke and lighty **** the cap into place. MAKE SURE NONE OF THE ROLLERS HAVE BECOME UNSEATED AND GOT TRAPPED UNDER THE UJ!!!!


repeat fer the other 3 caps

and install yer circlips, you may find you have to use a large vice and two sockets to push the caps on far enough to enable the circlips to engage the groove

grease up with yer favourite grease gun and bob's a fat ****

Went and got the smaller uj's with the nipples today and it's a diffrunt part no. but same size. The box says ' U.J- H.D with greaser corresponding to TVC100010'. Had a look fur the heavy-metal bloke but couldnae find him in the box:D Dae ye think ah should complain?

I had the same with my 90 earlier this year.i opted for the non nippled type and they lasted about 6 months,shyte!Had to change them a couple of months ago.Motor factors wernt interested cos id got a 2"lift fitted,REKNAWS.
With regards to heavy metal guy i think he may have slipt out on route. and yeah i do think you should complain.
 
Get a tube of ROCOL MT-LM Assembly Paste grease.
It is about 60% molybdenum di-sulphide.
Put a decent blob into each cup prior to assembly.

Joint will last 3 - 4 times as long.

Amazing stuff.

About £16 a 4-ounce tube. I have lots and lots here, even in a great big can. Nothing here gets assembled without it.

Aye, cheers guys, bit scunnered noo!!!!! Got one side of the prop done alright, second side was going alright too till ah went tae tighten the things up, ah think there's a bollockin' needle roller fallen over!!!!!:mad: :mad: :mad: Can't budge the **** any further in, so ah guess ah'll have tae try and get it apart again and maybe use one of the spare uj's ah've got...... unless there's another way?;) :D
 
Bought another uj the day, got home tae have a look at what ah'd done and found the problem. It turned out tae be the wee cup with the seal in it got twisted a bit.......



Job's dun and dusted now;) :D :D :D :D
