Hi all
When I went to put my props back on after a clutch change I found that my dad had kindly cleaned them up, he also removed both the rear prop alignment marks I had made and one from the front prop diff end.....Thanks dad
I put them back on and all seemed okay,
On a motorway run the other day I thought i noticed a vibration at about 60 to 70 so backed off, not bad, more of a strong hum.
At normal road speeds there is no vibration at all.
Not sure if i was imagining it as I have replaced lots of bits and bobs with the clutch the exhaust etc making the car sound slightly different.

How would it sound if I had got the props in the wrong place?

How do I now get the other three connections of the props back in in the right place, is there a trick?

The front prop to transfer box was the only mark still visible.

Thanks in advance.

Mick

As longs as the prop ends are 'phased' correctly it possibly wont make too much difference, i doubt if its the first time they have been taken off and i dont know if even the factory would have dynamically balanced the whole train???

I know this isn't a Discovery shaft but the alignment is the same for most prop shafts;

The front shaft on my Discovery 300TDI will only fit one way, the splines are offset. I believe this is because the centre of the flanges are both downward and to one side.

Thanks for the reply
Its all a bit over my head, so i am going to break it down a bit more.
The haynes manual said make alignment marks when you remove the props at each end so they go back into the same bolt holes, I have only removed the prop and then replaced it.
My dad removed the marks to align the rear prop so i had to guess what nut went into what hole, on the front prop he had rubbed off the mark to align the diff end but the transfer box was still visible so went back as it was removed
My point is i was unable to exactly rematch them nut for hole the way the props came off and that's what i am worried about.

Is this an issue?
and if it is how can I test i have them wrong.

Thanks gents

Mick

ive bever marked mine and have had front one off and run about on one propfor a week then stuck a new prop in
dont reackon it makes much differance but there only four bolts so if your concerned try refitting it one bolt round till your happy

it will only need balancing if youve had the yokes apart & pout them back in a different orientation..ie didnt mark them..if they stayed complete it makes no difference how it goes, new or old prop
