Has anybody experianced this problem with the td4 auto gearbox. Just recentley the gear change has become very, very violent in all gears, up and down shift. This does not happen all the time, and sometimes it will drive perfect, but it is very worrying, and I have stopped driving it until the problem is sorted out, and I have no idea where to begin. Hopefully some of you experts might be able to advise what the problem could be. Thanks for any advice or help you can offer.

Good plan, and I would suggest you drain the oil into a pristine clean container.
This is not to save the oil, but rather to let you see what sort of colour it is, and how much crap is in it.

Then compare the colour of the drained oil with new oil. Dirty, cloudy and black is bad. Bright clear red is good.

Thanks for your help and I will try that and let you know. Just spoke to a Land rover garage and they have said straight away that the gearbox has had it. Not even said to bring it in for a diagnostic test.

you need to drop the bottom pan(sump) and the filter is usually a big square thing that look abit like an oven extracter filter. you need to buy..filter,oil and a new gasket fer the pan. the pan is usually held in by a shed load of screws around the outer edge, like yer injun sump

aye they do that, then they'll change the filter and fluid and bill yer fer a noo box.

Aye Slob, right enough, but give them their dues - they would pressure-wash it as well to make it LOOK like they had changed the box. Fair's fair ....

Dont panic yet,I have sorted a couple of F/L's recently with a violent shift quality. One was Td4,the other was a V6 - both had failed solenoid valves that are located inside the oil pan which is vertical on the front of the box.The standard LR test proceedure is to measure the resistance of the solenoids - thats fine, but it does not mean that the plunger actually moves when a current is applied. They cost between 17 and 35 quid each and I replaced 3 on both cars.I did this because I looked through the manual and decided which ones could cause the relevent symptoms - for the amount of trouble and cost involved the owners agreed it was worth the gamble.
Both cars are now working well - the TD4 is apparently smoother than it has been since they bought it.Dont worry too much about the colour of the tranny fluid, the Jatco boxes all seem to make the fluid go brown and smell bad,but then it smells odd when its new anyway.Sorry to dribble on but its been a long day and I'm now pi--ed.(Trying to get all the cars back to owners/garages so I can go on holiday);)

Thanks eightinavee. I have changed the oil now but its still the same. I am having a diagnostic on friday, I will try your idea if a fault do'es not show.
Thanks again everybody

Forgot to say - the fault codes will be misleading too,I just went down the solenoid route because I did not believe the boxes were U/S at such a low mileage and the faults fitted the listed symptoms.Ijust dont like changing heavy, dirty things that cost lots when small bits will do.

Just had the results back, but not by a Landy dealer and it does show a fault, "No P0702., GAND return short circuit to battery". Googled it and it has come up with a "Transmission Control System Electrical" which sounds promising. Any ideas what that means?, hopefully, it will be a switch, or something not too serious. PS I am away for a while, so may not be able to acknowledge for a while.
Thanks

Still having big problems with the landy, so much so that I am thinking of giving up and scrapping it. Whatever the problem is, it has now cost me the IRD unit, and viscose coupling, which I have renewed. I am not driving the car as I cannot afford another IRD/Viscose. Fault codes read, selector and inhibitor swith, which has now been changed, but to no avail, and the last one is GAND return short circuit to battery. Landrover cannot/will not tell me anything about this fault. Anybody got any ideas. The test equipment is I think a Smartbox.
Thanks
