We're having problems with starting our Freelander. Sometimes it starts as soon as you turn the ignition, but more often than not we turn the ignition and nothing. Try repeating several times and then suddenly it fires. Any ideas what may be causing this?

All the lights on the dash come on, as does the stereo. Headlight remain undimmed. When you turn the ignition one of three things happens;

1. Nothing, it just clicks. (This can happen a dozen times)
2. Very feeble attempt at firing.
3. Fires

Problem finally solved. Turned out to be the ignition, not the starter motor. Oh well I've now got a fully reconditioned Freelander starter motor for sale if anyone want one.:D

The switch on the rear of the ignition is a popular fail point for starting and electrical problems. Had both faults on mine and both due to the switch.

my wife had same problem some years ago traced it to the ignition switch and all I did was to get some fine sand paper and do all the contacts in the switch after I had taken it apart, I did mention this in another thread a long time ago.
