Hi all

I'm having problems starting my td4 last 2 weeks. It just cranks and cranks and wont turn over for a while. Also it loses power (thought it was turbo problem but turns out turbo is fine) when you hold high speeds on the motorway. It was recently serviced and the fuel filter was changed.
Would the pump be the problem
Oh its a 03 TD4 ES

Cheers

the starting issue could be a faulty injector leaking back, quite common on the td4. if it is worse when it is cold, likely to be an injector, if it is worse when hot, likely to be cam sensor.

spray easy start into the air inlet. if it fires straight away, 9/10 to be faulty injector.

good luck

try spraying the cam sensor(in front of oil cap) with freeze spray available from toolstation or any plumbers merchants costs about a fiver. i had this trouble with mine. you could also check out roverrons website it's full of good advice.

right. i changed the injector fuel lines but still having starting problems
in case you misunderstood, Optimus was advising that you test the injectors themselves for excessive leak back not check the pipes for leaks.

this problem only started once my intercooler pipe decided to rip itself to death.would that have any bearing on the problem?

I have had starting problems caused by both the primary (LP) fuel pump and leaking injectors. The easy way to determine which is the cause is to use Easy Start. Ease the inlet manifold jubilee clip and spray a LITTLE into the manifold then start the engine. It will run which ever is wrong. If it is a faulty fuel pump it will stop after the Easy Start is used up, if it is a leaking injector it will continue to run.

The reasons for this are in the case of a leaking injector the HP pump cannot raise sufficient pressure for the injectors to work at cranking speed. Once the engine is running it can deliver sufficient flow to overcome the leakage. If LP pressure is too low the ECU prevents the engine fro running to protect the HP pump from cavitation.

You stated that the fuel filter had been changed. Were the pipe joints refitted properly or are they permitting air to be sucked into the pipe between the tank and the LP pump?
Chaser has also reported that fitting the filter the wrong way round causes fuel delivry problems.
