Problem with park brake on Discovery 3

Hi, I have read all the advice about the issues with the epb, but have yet to get an explanation as to the way mine is working. I had to replace both hand brake cables as the offside one broke. On 1st assembly and activating the brake I discovered the offside end cable came off the brake shoe. On 2nd assembly I found I had accidentally put tension on the emergency release cable. On 3rd assembly I realised I had stripped cogs in the epb gearbox. On 4th assembly with the cover off the module, when I pull up switch module turns and moves laterally about an inch before then unwinding an inch distance and the white brake icon lights to join the already red brake icon. There is no squeal noise.. from the module other than the shaft winding and unwinding. The other issue is I have now got a false fuel gauge reading since I started working on the park brake. Any ideas?
