problem with lpg

Hi I have a 93 discovery 3.9 with gas fitted, it starts ok on petrol but will not switch to gas ,after starting and the red petrol light is on, when I press the button the green gas lights light up showing I have half a tank of gas but the red petrol light stay on as well and after a while all the lights go off. This is the first car I have had with lpg on so am I doing something wrong or is there a problem with the system ,any advice would be greatly appreciated

Hi, would be usefull to know what system it is.....and where you are in the world....if your close to Stroud pop it round....pm me.

Might be worth checking that the vapouriser under the bonnet warms up while the car idles as the system normally requires a tempreture to be reached before it allows change over to gas.

With the ignition off, carefully check for broken wire's on and around the vapouriser and at the tank end, and finally underneath if you can see them as it may be getting to temp but the signal not getting throught to the solenoids to allow gas flow.

Do you know there is any gas in it, the gauges/lights aint particularly accurate.

Hi thanks for the answers, but I am going to sound really stupid here and ask where the vapouriser would be and what it would look like as I can't see anything under the bonnet that shouldn't be there and as for there being gas in, I .don't know for definate but the gauge on the gas tank says the same as the lights. I havn't had the car long so I have never seen the car run on gas and don't know nothing at all about gas so as much advice as possible please

Please don't take this the wrong way but if you have no experience of a car running on LPG, what makes you so sure it is not switching? Does the engine stop when all the lights go out? If not, go round the back and sniff the exhaust. Does it smell gassy?

How do you know the tank is half full, have you ever put gas in? If not, I suggest you go and fill it up so we can eliminate an empty tank as the culprit.

The vapouriser will be a flat cylindrical item, probably mounted on the oposite side to the battery. It will have two water hoses and a third hose which will go to the inlet side of the Plenum chamber.

What system is it?

On some systems, they switch over at certain revs and the switch is for option to run on petrol all the time, or gas, but it will still start on petrol.

May i suggest once again that you tell us where you are, someone might be near, and if your not sure of what you are looking for, take a good, clear picture under the bonnet of the engine, then we can point you to the vapouriser.

Hi thanks for all your help but I messed around with it to much today and now it won't light up at all ,so bollocks it's staying on petrol, just need to fix the fuel gauge now. Thanks again

Get it serviced like I did with my previous LPG car. Its worth doing for the fuel saving.
