Problem starting p38 R/Rover 2.5dt manual is it possible that the security system has gone haywire

The p38 was running fine for the last 6months of ownership and last week it was hard to start after several attempts it fired up with a lot of exhaust smoke and diesel fumes,this eventually cleared and run fine all day. That evening it hesitated to start but finally did but run very sluggish and slow but got better after reaching running temperature, Next morning no go at all. Could it be glow plug failure, As I read the bmw engines must have full glow plug function or will not start, need help on this one please regards Derf

Since I’m here
- does it turn over with plenty of power but not fire up, or does it turn sluggishly then fire eventually? Should go like a spinning top.
- Are you capable of doing things yourself, what state of service/mileage is it?
- do you have any aftermarket things fitted to fuelling like hotstart kit or powerbox?
