Fur trapper..

do you understand the question he asked?

he's not asking about buying privately or dealer..

he's asking about selling!

even if you sell privately, like i've always done, the buyer signs a paper saying, sold on the xxx date at xxx hours, sold as seen, no warranty given.

You will all ways get more cash if you sell it your self, you just have to be willing to deal with the people comeing to look, over price by a few hundred so you have cash to nock off when they come round to make you an offer.

If you sell sight as seen it does not matter if it blows up after they have got more than 5 feet away as its up to them to check it. I have sold all my cars privatley and you get way more cash.

Dont let the questions about what would you do if it broke down in 60 days or the end of the road put you off, as once its sold its sold. Thats the end of it, your not a dealer and no buyer will expect dealer services off you.

Nah, just do like I did.
when I sold my disco, guy comes round looks at it and asks how much.
I says £1200...
he says will you take £1000?

So I said to him "right.. i know we all like to haggle a price, so let me start this again, Hi I'm JP, Disco is for sale for 1400, but as I like you I'll knock 200 off it"

hows that now?

lol

I think that Furry is probably based in the US and in the US as a private seller you have to put right a car you sell - its called the "lemon law". Whereas in the UK its buyer beware and the moment they sign the document and pay you then it is their problem. I had a cavalier way back and the exhaust fell off as the bloke drove out of my driveway - I had no idea it was about to fall off and felt no obligation to give him any of his cash back. Probably helped that I am a big lad but never saw him again!

Wrong no lemon law on used cars just new cars/trucks. Used cars are buyer beware. Unless through a dealer with warranty.
My point is why does a person believe they should get the same money as a garage/dealer who offers a warranty.

There is a lemon law on private cars in MA. I know cause I had to pay out when I sold my old PT loser!

If I gave that impression in my original post, I didnt mean to. My point was more that whereas a dealer may give me £6k and sell it for £8k, could I get £7k if I sold privately. **Illustrative numbers!

Dealers, as any other merchant, clearly buy cheap and sell high. I just want to know whether i could get a better price than the £6k offer from the dealer (if I sell through them, rather than to them), albeit not as much as they'd sell it for, if I sell it privately?

Answers on a post card!

FT, I think you're missing the point on this one. Private vehicle sales are pretty common here in theUK,and it works like this.

Assume vehicle value is £5k

Dealer offers seller £4k, tarts it up, and puts it on forecourt for £6k.

But seller can advertise it in local paper for £5k.

As a buyer, I can either pay £6k from a second hand car lot with a 3 month warranty (which probably has fine print meaning it's worth bugger all)

Or take a good look at the £5k one, satisfy myself there's nothing majorly wrong. If some thing should happen after a few weeks then I've still got a few bob in my pocket from not buying from the dealer to fix it.

Entirely missed the point... again

To the OP -- definitely sell it yourself; my advice would be eBay. Clean it up well, take some decent pictures and compose a thorough write up, then list it with no reserve and watch the bids fly in.

Why give it away to a dealer who is only going to do exactly as above? It is your Landy but at the end of the day I would be trying to get as much for it as possible :)
