Sadly the time has come to sell our landy. Starting a family, lack of space and lack of use means it can't be justified any more... Perhaps to be replaced in the future when we're more flush.

Anyway - its a 97 300tdi 110 csw in good nick. 108000miles. Failed last mot due to brake servo leaking which has now been fixed - otherwise good with just a 5p seized bit of rust on the rear crossmember and the rear door sill is flaky.

A local dealer has offered me £5k cash or £6k if they sell it on my behalf, and they'll do the minor tarting up that it needs (cross member and rear door).

Strikes me that if a dealer is offering this I could probably get more privately. But I've never sold privately before - do you think it's worth the hassle to get a bit more cash (and do you think I'd get much more?)?

Only photo I've got is this one - it's not as blingy as it makes it look! this was after putting new wheels / tyres on in homebase carpark on a cold evening last march!

If thats the only piece of rust on it ill give you 5K for it. :D

Being a CSW it is more desirable and obviously worth a little more if its in good order under neath.

when a dealer buys a car off you, he'll need to make a profit on it when time comes to sell...

so if it's a car that will sell for lets say 4k, a dealer will offer you a lot less than that, so they can make a profit on it, so usually their offers are a lot less than what you can easily sell the car privately

FURRY!............ that is why the american economy is ****ed and your not the president....:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D

Thats what I thought also but JP and Doodle bug says private sale more. 8-9 k puts you into TD5 110 w/less than 90kmiles 02-04 model year
the hole reason why people are happy to spend more on a 200/300 tdi defender is that you can fix it for next to nout with a bucket of spanners now a td5/tdci the first thing you need is a computer and when you are in the middle of nowere thats stupis

For me it's all about time, If you have the time to spend on fixing up the landy (cross member and rear door) then why not ask more and sell it yourself. However is time is short and you need the cash fast, go for the quick sell with the dealer.

A couple questions M8 about doing a private sale. Let me ask, you sell to private person and 30 miles down the road the head gasket takes a ****,or radiator, waterpump, thermostat , or the whole cooling system, What will you do for the buyer????????? or this happens within 60 days

It's time for your med meds furry, tuck your arm into this and the other one in here, good boy, now nursey can give you a little prick and the next thing you'll know is it's breakfast time again. :D:D:D

Private sales carry a bit of risk, but so does everything. In my experience you gain more in a private sale, but they can be a hassle because people are knocking on your door or calling you all the time. And you have to be comfortable with horse trading.

The only time your going to get big money from a dealer is in trade-value and they usually get that back by tweaking the price of the car you're trading for.

All interesting stuff - basically, I could probably get £7k for a private sale but with a bit more ball ache.

Time is tight as we're expecting our first in 2 weeks...

£6k selling through, rather than to, the dealer with them doing the work sounds like a good bet.

Interesting question about things going wrong in a private sale - presume, unless I've actively concealed something, that it's on the buyer to properly check it out before buying? Once it's theirs, it's their problem? All said and done, it's in good nick so wouldn't expect that to happen.

What do others think?
