just been down to drop off new seats for the series 3 and the mechanic fired her up for me, its the first time i have heard it running in 3 years very exciting! cant believe the progress he has made, hopefully it will be finished by the end of the week he is confident it will come in well under the 100 hours which is great to hear.
But that brings me to another problem hopefully by the beginning of next week i will have a fully MOT'ed landy so what the hell do i insure her for? A quick look on Autotrader and anything that is similar to what mine will be is around £7,000-£8,000. I will definitely be insuring it fully comp.

Do you think that is a reasonable amount or should i drop or raise the value?

I have no intention of ever selling this landy i am hoping to have it until i can pass it on to one of my children (my first is only 1 year old so the landy will be safe for a while!) so if it is stolen or ruined i would need to have enough insurance to replace it with another fully running series 3 or 2.

Make sure you insure the Landy as a classic car with an agreeed value. Phone up somewhere like Adrian Flux. You will need to provide pics and receipts etc to prove all the work done and explain it would cost you that to replace the car.
I would say about £8k but then I don’t know what they would say about it.
Had an agreed value years ago on a classic Mini.

I have insured her with Adrian Flux for 3000 miles a year which should be enough its not my daily driver and i will only be pottering around the farm and local roads, also with added cover for any passengers in the vehicle, with a valuation of £8,000 for £140 a year, i am pretty happy with that, after a year i will see if i can tweak things to change the annual charge but at £2.70 per week i am fairly pleased.

Yep that sounds about right. How good does it make you feel that you will have no mot or tax costs and the insurance is so cheap?

Unfortunately my series 3 is a 1981 so I have to wait until 2021 for that, but it's only 3 years away, I just can't wait to get behind the wheel again! Fingers crossed she steers a bit straighter now!

I think this has been a great thread, it really points out that sometimes its best to pay the money and get back on the road and remember that a Series is most fun when its being driven.

Oh ok you should be ok for an mot for the next few years anyhow judging by all the work she's had.

Thats the one thing i am really pleased with the mechanic was very happy with the work i had done and said it is going to be pretty much a brand new landy with an old body on it fingers crossed i have many untroubled happy miles in it!
the other thing is if it has taken him 80-100 hours to finish her in a purpose built workshop with all the tools and know how, how long would it have taken me with the bear minimum 5 years??

i will get some pictures up as soon as i get her back.

I got a heritage certificate / report on mine which is also a March 1981 registered vehicle. I found that the build certificate confirms that it was actually built on Nov 1980 so I can apply for tax free status earlier with that. Might be worth a check.

How did you go about doing that and how much did it cost?

had a quick look online is the British Motor Museum the only place that can do these? seems to cost £45 for a certificate.

Yes, British motor museum.

You also see the original build spec and the dealer to which it was dispatched to. £45 sounds about right; not cheap but a nice for the history file if you’re restoring it.

I took the plunge and ordered it, if it saves me a year of MOT & Tax then it's money well spent if not it's nice to have

That is the landy ready to pick up from Strathearn engineering now that she is all finished and has passed her MOT! which is great news apart from the fact i now have a whooping great big bill to pay.....

However i am not going to dwell on that too much its a lot of money but i have been saving up for a long time for this moment and i knew it wasn't going to be cheap, there has also been many many painful hours spent stripping her down and rebuilding (part) of her with lots and lots of blood sweat and tears!

The final hourly total came to 86 hours so its more than originally quoted however they where just going on my description over the phone and thought the body was removed in one piece which unfortunately wasn't the case, however it is less than their second estimate which is a silver lining!
There where also quite a few parts to order for the old girl as some of them where not economically viable to save but they have been gentle.....

So all in all i am very excited about picking her up later on this week and will no doubt spend the entire weekend pottering about the local roads, fingers crossed the weather holds!

86 hours sounds very fair for all the work. Its hard to put a value on getting something finshed that was languishing, but it is considerable and as much mental as financial.

Well that was a terrifying drive back home! Took an hour to get home and straight onto the dual carriageway, not the best place to reacquaint myself with series steering!
By the time I got home it was all back to normal and it's very exciting to have her parked up in the shed. Still a couple of minor things to do like fit the sills and mud flaps and paint the parts I didn't get round to, but it's got no advisory's on the MOT which is amazing. Let me know what you all think.
