Preoblem starting FL2 - Newbie from Edinburgh, UK

Hi,

I've just joined as a new owner of 09 freelander 2 2.2 diesel. I've got a problem, 2 days after buying...

The car won't start. It accepts the key into the slot on the dash, and radio and lights etc. come on, however steering column remains locked.

Press the clutch and hit start button, no lights on the dash at all and just a click and a soft hum (fuel pump?). The starter motor doesn't turn at all and steering column remains locked.

I replaced the battery with a brand new one, but still the same...

Help anybody?
