Hi,

Need you to help a Discovery driver based in Moscow!

My garage has advised me that my steering 'reducter' (that's the Russian word) needs to be replaced - an online translation throws up the following variations: dual high transmission; reducing gear train; speed reduction device; speed-decreasing drive; speed-reducing drive; speed-reducing gear; wheelbox.

Basically the power steering is knackered - it's practically impossible to turn the wheel when at a standstill and transmission fluid leaks under the car. I've been advised to pick up a second hand one, as a new one costs just under GBP 2k in Moscow, which is about the value of my Landy. I'll need to get it in the UK, as there aren't any second hand ones here.

Any ideas, anyone, what this reducter would be in English?

thanks for your help.

Cheers,

Alex

Whelbox is the closest in translation to the Power Steering Box, if it is leaking from the front of your Disco and your steering has no power assistance then 9times out of 10 the power steering box has a seal that has failed. Many appear on eBay stating that they do not leak but they are all nice and clean for the photo to appear on eBay so the oil has usually been cleaned off beforehand. Have a look at Paddocks or Craddocks prices for outright sale as they are not that badly priced either for a recon unit or new and I am quite sure they would export to Russia. If an exchange unit is required I am sure that somebody on LZ will have a knackered one for that purpose.

Paddocks do a pas pump for a 200tdi for £158.44 dunt say if it's exchange/standerd so you will have to give em a ring they will tell you how much postage to Moskyland at the same time!

thanks for your answers so far! I've got a Discovery I, '91 - so I guess I'd have to get one specifically for that series, or are the wheelboxes the same on the later series too?

As you did'nt mention it I looked @ yeh profile:1991 Disco is a 200tdi & no a 300tdi pas (power steering pump) wont do the job.

there seems to be a difference in opinion - so is it the PAS or the wheelbox?
just took a pic under the car - you can clearly see in the foreground a drop of transmission fluid about to drop off the tie rod. does this help pin point exactly what it is?

The picture you've taken is underneath the power steering box,
by the sounds of it that's what the garage told you was wrong with it.
