Hi, i have been going through some fords the last couple of days - max depth at the marker was 2 1/2 ft. When i am going through my defender seems to stuggle a bit and i get the battery light come on, i manage to get though but when i get to the other side its very difficult to turn the wheel. After about 20 seconds of standing still, its back to normal again...

I have checked the power steering fluid which is at the correct level..

Any suggestions???

Many thanks,

Al

Belt slip ... dunno about Defender, but on my Disco if I go for too long in deep water I used to get the same, which was the serpentine belt sliping on the alternator pulley, so no charge, and slipping on the PS pump, so no turning easily!!

Easy fix, change the belts and tension them correctly.

Mind, when mine started doing it the alternator bearings were also fecked ... ;)

It's normal when the belts get dunked for them to slip.
Worth checking the tension though, but don't be tempted to over tighten.

Cool! will have a look at this tonight! Whats the max depth i should be going through in my Defender? Felt a little nervous at 2 1/2 ft!

Cheers,

Al

Landrover say between 500 and 600 mm .. so you're about there. ;)

Hmmm, will look into this - its not a habbit of going through water - just wanted to try out my defedner. I have a snorkle fitted and working...

Thanks for the advise..

Heh, with a diesel and properly fitted snorkel, wading plugs and extended breathers al bets are off ... you can go as deep as you like, up to the air inlet!

Mind, the deepest depth is mostly how far you want water to come into the cab area ... 'specially if you're wading for a long time/distance ... ;)
