Hi. Lost power steering today on my 200tdi Defender (Disco 200TDI engine... hence the post here and in Defender!). Can anyone advise how I can check if it is the pump or the box? There is no pump noise when I rotate the steering wheel as there used to be, especially on full lock. When I undo the bleed nipple some fluid flows out but very little and slowly. There is no gush of pressure or fluid, just a slow stream.

I recently removed my 2.5td and fitted the 200tdi. I used the old box but the 200tdi pump that was on the engine. I was told this was OK. Could this have caused a failure!?

Hope someone can help…. Easter Monday job awaits!

How long was the steering ok after the transplant? I am unsure if there is a compatability issue with the box/pump?

Dirt is the bain of power steering systems, is it possible some got in during the tranplant? When you move the steering wheel hard on lock can you feel/hear/see any reduction in engine revolutions? If not then it is probably the pump.

If it was air then the fluid would be foaming in the reservoir but would indicate some pump activity, if I loosen the bleed nipple on my steering box (200tdi Disco) when the engine is running it comes out at a fair rate under pressure indicating pump is at least doing something.

Hope that helps with diagnosis?

Other will be along sooooooooooon

regards

Dave
