Driving home this evening, I stop at a traffic light and all was well.
When I go to pull off, I have almost no power.
The engine does not cut off and idles fine but almost no power.
I am almost home so continue at a very slow speed, no smoke and temperature is fine. The rpm's will not go much above idle but we make it home.
I figure dirty fuel so I pull the fuel filter and empty the contents into a glass jar, no water or dirt!

What should I check next?

Thanks.

Throttle cable slipped

OK, went out this morning and changed the fuel filter.
She started but there was a grinding sound that went away after about 15seconds.
Then she idled fine. I checked the throttle cable and the turbo hoses and all is good there.
I think the noise that I heard when she first started is the lift pump, as she idled I could hear a slight ticking sound coming from the area of the pump.

After she warmed up I revved her up a couple times and she finally stalled out from fuel starvation (or so it seemed)

So I will order a new pump.

Any other thoughts?

Thanks.

Mine was doing same after I picked it up after it's mot. So I turned back around and went back to garage and they told me the lift pump was gone Evan tho it's only 2 months old. So I changed it and all was good again for how long who knows :D

If the lift pump has a small screw on the top of it, such as Delphi ones do, there is a gauze inside them which can clog up from time to time, worth checking and cleaning that. There was a good thread on here about it, will try and find it.

Will check it out.

Ordered 2 new lift pumps this morning, hopefully they will be here by Thursday as Friday is a holiday.
I specified "Land rover Brand".

Amazing how inexpensive parts are for these vehicles!

Thanks.

Shes done it again!!!

Installed a new (LandRover Brand) lift pump and she started and ran great for a couple weeks.
Yesterday when I was leaving work, I thought I heard a strange sound when I started her. Sure enough, I didnt get 1/4 mile up the road when she started running really rough and lost almost all power. At first there was also a strong scent of raw diesel.

Called the wrecker and brought her home. She looks so sad and embarrassed this morning. :-(

What could it be?

Thanks.

It's common for these new pumps to fail ! Take it off and check the length of the arm that runs against your camshaft ! If it's the same check it's action make sure it sucks up fuel and pumps it out of the outlet !! I've recently experienced this with 2 new pumps !! very poor quality !! I am now using the older series type pumps ! Rebuild able and much better quality it seems !!

Thanks,

When I ordered, I ordered 2 pumps so I have a spare.
I will check it out and report back.

So, whats the best fuel lift pump I can get for my 3ootdi ?
The 2 that I got were Land Rover brand made in Germany.
Figured they would be as good as they get.

OK.

My mechanic came and pulled the new lift pump, seems fine.

We then removed the fuel filter to check for dirt, it was 3/4 EMPTY!!
There was no dirt in the filter.

Does this mean 1. A clog between the filter and fuel tank or
2. A leak in the fuel line?

Every now and then I have been getting a smell of raw diesel so I am thinking leaking fuel line between the tank and filter.

Thoughts?

Thanks.
