Hi all,

I treated my 90 (300tdi) on a service a fortnight ago.
Bought a Britpart service kit of ebay for around £17 which included air filter, oil filter, fuel filter and washers.

As I hadn't done it before I had the Haynes manual out and a mate give me a hand.
Changed the air filter first as that looked the easiest.
We then changed the engine oil, used a tin of engine flush to get the crap out and poured in the new oil. I used 5L of "Mobil Super 2000 X1 10W40 Diesel" oil and another bottle 1.5L of Halfords 10w40.

Last up was the fuel filter; which looked pretty easy in the Haynes manual but turned out to be a right pain in the backside. Fitted the new filter after filling it up with diesel and then came to the bit where you have to prime it using the litlle handle. Played about with that for ages but it didnt seem to bleed at all.
We got fed up with it in the end and decided to google for an answer and found on landrovernet.com that the 300tdi engine should "self-prime".
So we started the engine and after a few go's it ran fine; took it for a spin and again seemed fine.

The next day I tried to start it in the morning and it was really struggling and found when slowing down at crossings and at traffic lights it just stalled.
At first I thought it could be the airfilter I fitted as I replaced my K&N filter with the britpart and it seemed to have lost lots of power. So I ordered a K&N "Recharger" kit with which I cleaned the old filter and resprayed the oil back on. Fitted it after it dried and got some power back but it still struggles starting and it still stalls.

So now I'm a little confused; could this be due to air in the fuel system, the oil I used or am I missing something else?

Thanks.

Def sounds like a fuel starvation problem..are you leaking fuel anywhere? Are the fuel pipes tight?

Thanks, haven't seen any leaks yet; will have to double check tomorrow.
The fuel pipes haven't been touched so should be fine really, will also check in the morning. Will post my findings asap.

Fuel starvation by the sounds of it, re check all connections and stop buying Britpart, especially over a K&N filter ;)

It had a Halfords oil filter and a Britpart fuel filter fit before we changed it. I have read lots of bad stuff on Britpart but it ran really well on it. Was not planning on keeping the Britpart air filter on to be honest and am glad I put my refurbished K&N back on as it definitly got more power than the Britpart.

engine flush fluids on a tractor like engine such as the 200/300 isn't such a good idea as they tend to strip away all of the loverly black deposit that is helping keep the engine compression at a reasonable level

I agree, my Dad always taught me that engine flushing causes more issues than good on older engines.

Doh:doh: that makes sense really; should've thought of that before.

Checked this afternoon; all seems fine to me. Fuel pipes ok and definitly no (fuel) leaks.
If there were to be air in the fuel system, would this work its way out itself?

Check that you have both seals fitted on the fuel filter, or sometimes you can leave the old centre seal on the housing & fit new one, ending up with too many & then drawing in air .

**** in the tank.

thats not going to solve anything:D
:D:rofl::D

re Trew: could be, but if there was crap in the tank it should have effected it before I serviced it though.

Have you guys ever fiddled with that prime lever? I had another play with that but it doesnt do anything? Should it pump fuel?

I might try filling the filter up with diesel, see if that helps.

I've never been able to get the pump lever to do anything.
I always fill the filter with diesel then screw it on - never had a problem.

Take the little lift pump off ( the bit that the prime lever is attached to ) & make sure it is pumping, there is another lever inside that runs off the camshaft, operate it by hand & check the pipes to make sure 1 is sucking & 1 blowing !!!
