Good evening peeps, new to the forum and having sold my defender a couple of years ago and bitterly regretted it. So I’ve started to look for a project, with the ever rising cost of Series and defenders I’ve been looking at a long term project some this tax and not exempt. Through a face book post and asking and asking I’ve found one a 1968 109 series 11a I believe in quite a bad way but quite original at a very reasonable price. HOWEVER !! the owner only owned it because they bought the building it’s parked on and have no paper work for it, it has its number plates on there but I was unable to locate a vin plate ? I thought this should be just infront of the gear lever on the bulk head panel but there seems to be some sort of aftermarket heater fitted there ?? Before pasting with any cash and transportation costs I wanted to make sure I can register the beast, so called DVLA this afternoon well they have said without a chassis number it’s not possible to register the vehicle. I was wondering if this is in fact true ? I can’t be the first person to want to restore an old rusty wreck with no paper work ? They have said over the phone the ref number comes back as an ex military Land Rover 1968 and a log book/ change of keeper was last done in 1988 but without submitting a V62 complete with chassis/vin number they will not be able to register the vehicle ? Any help or suggestions would be very gratefully received ! Thanks in advance Matt

The vin plate might behind the flat panel heater which being a 2a should be std fit.
Reg number might be enough, join the series 2 forum and ask on there, they will give you a definitive answer.
Have you looked for the chasis number?
 
Hi Lynall, thanks for the reply there is a heater thing fitted there !! I’d not thought of behind it though, I’ll have to pop back tomorrow and have a decent look, it was pouring when I went to look and I’d got decent clothes on like a total pillock ! The chassis on the osf is totally rotten the spring hanger on its way in an upwards direction so if it’s still there it is totally unreadable unfortunately but I will definitely go and look behind the panel heater. Thanks again
 
From 59 s2 parts catalgue, these had the little round heater so had the vin plate in the dash.
Maybe previous owner removed vin plate and stored it with the veh docs?
Like i mentioned above s2 forum, as I know people used to go to gaydon and look in their files to find vehicles, not sure if by reg number or vin number, but you never know?

Again most kind this is exactly where I thought it should be but there is indeed a flat panel type heater thing there with an exposed blower motor there too ?? It’s from an old farmyard so god knows whose fiddled with it or added bits in the last 40 years lol
 
Just looked on ebay 68 and 69 s2a both with the round heater and vin plate in normal place so maybe its still there, if so dont tell the seller, use it as a bargaining chip.

Try and find the engine number. If it is the original engine, it should be possible to match it up with a chassis number.
Or at least to find out what type of vehicle it was fitted in. There are lists in the original manuals of what chassis had what engine, gearbox, body type, etc, when the vehicle was built.
There are various ways you can go with this. As @lynall says, S2 forum and club may assist.
Another thing you could do is to find someone selling the identity, VIN plate and reg doc of a similar vehicle which has been written off.
And then rebuild on a new galv chassis, which sounds like a good idea anyway, using good bits off the vehicle you have found.
You will then have a full set of numbers to send off, and a good vehicle.

Some of those were fitted with the 6 cylinder petrol engine, which is a nice drive, and quite rare now.
 
I’d looked there first before asking on here and I’ve just posted on the series 2 forum too the guy wants £150 for it lol it will cost tripple that to get it moved to my garage though and it’s useless to me personally if it can’t be registered I’ve not really got the space to break it up and no interest in that really. I’ll pop back another day and look for the vin plate again see what I can find but this time in sensible clothes

I’ve seen quite a few erm erm “restoration” books with tags for sale on eBay but this doesn’t rest that easy in my mind really I can’t help thinking that people selling tags and books are fuelling the ever increasing number of stolen ones the length of the country. I read somewhere that something

And common sense will avoid buying anything stolen. Like going to meet the seller in person, and asking them questions about the vehicle during their ownership. Internet sales, and paying in postal orders or cash, are to be avoided. Paying by BACS transfer creates an electronic trail to a bank account.
New standard galvanised chassis, log book, and different engine of a standard type are acceptable to DVLA, the main thing is to tell them what they want to hear. The vintage car people do it all the time.
