hi guys

I've got a 110 land rover with a 300tdi disco engine in it. currently having problems regarding the fuel system.

its got enough fuel running through it to start up and idle fine, however once i get going i will start to lose power then cut out... give it a minute, start again then cut out after 20 meters or so (sometimes less sometimes more)

now I've changed the fuel sender unit, fuel lift pump, fuel filter and removed an inline filter that was after the fuel filter. I've removed the outlet on the fuel filter to check the flow and make sure everything is running fine up to that point.

this is a problem that has gotten progressively worse from cutting out once on a 5 mile journey to underivable.

from what i can gather the signed may be pointing to the injector pump, maybe the solenoid.

thats pretty much where I'm up to at the moment and I'm hoping someone can help me out, I'm not very experienced when it comes to mechanics so anything in as much detail as possible and or point me in the direction of some guides.

cheers

-Michael

It might not be your issue but it's not uncommon for similar to be caused by a leak between tank and lift pump (negative pressure so doesn't leak fuel but sucks in air).

Fitting a clear section of pipe can help as you'll be able to see air bubbles.

Try running it off a bottle of derv under the bonnet(tube from lift pump intake in bottle of derv)-this will prove your lift pump and injection pump are fine and your issue is air ingress elsewhere

Have you checked the air path from snorkel / filter to inlet manifold, is a turbo hose delaminating, does the beast blow lots of black smoke before it stops?
And yes, I agree with the others on the basis I had a mate who was doing a desert crossing trip in his Landy and it was stopping regularly every 80 klm due to air locking of the fuel filter, the tiniest bit of air was leaking into the fuel line at a perished hose on the suction line side of the lift pump right back near the tank before the sedimenter.
To rule out the fuel solenoid, and if it's not an eds type pump, run a "hotwire" direct from the battery + terminal with a spade connector, if the solenoid "clicks" on connection it is opening, leave it connected that way whilst you start and go for a drive, you could have an intermittent electrical fault.
