Popping along then it started rattling!!

Just had a service, brakes, Mot stuff, and the head gasket done on my defender 110 300 Tdi. Out today in the snow popping along over Cefn Bryn, Gower, when out of nowhere a rattle, loss of power and lots of oil over the back of the engine and bulkhead. just spent over £500 on her so hope its not too serious. any ideas greatfully received.

Did the oil light come on BEFORE there was any rattling and loss of power?

How low is the oil on the dipstick? Have you had it on again since it did it?

Check the turbo pipes etc... could have been turbo loosing oil making funny noise which would also lead to loss in power, then check and see if you can see any loose oil pipes (to cooler) and check the filter is on properly and oil hasn't escaped here. However, that doesn't add up in my book as had it been this, I would have expected an oil pressue light before the oil got low enough to give any funny noises and loss in power.

Thanks for that. I haven't checked the oil on the stick, but there was no warning at all. No oil light or smell. She still runs and I managed to limp to my mates place about a mile away, no sign of any oil leaks before either.
 
Had some good news today, it sounds like a stud had sheered on the rocker shaft and a cap had blown, so hopefully not as bad as first thought!
 
Sounds ike they over tightened the rocker studs when putting the head back on - its easily done as people torque them up to the same as the head bolts!

Did the same to my BL A series engine a few months ago - on that one the rocker has two studs per support one is a head bolt and the other is mild steal stud just into the head - they both have the same size nut, and if you put the torque rench on the wrong one then it obviously sheares off.

I'd take it back to who ever did the head gasket, and get them to sort it out, and replace the stud(s)
 
People tend to horse the rocker cover down which can snap the stud or strip the thread in the head – both of which I have experience of after a previous owners attempt at sealing a leaky rocker cover.

I doubt that they were torqued down to the same torque as the head bolts, the stud/thread would not have allowed the torque even NEAR those figures before the stud or thread failed.

Rocker pedestal nuts should be torqued down to 5nm then angle tightened a further 50°.

The cover should then be torqued down 10nm which is not that tight.

If you have replacing the stud DO NOT USE a BRITPART stud, I have seen stronger fixings in an Ikea kit! Get a HT bolt or piece of threaded rod and make one.
