hi guys, newby here! Having problems with the old series III. Its a 2.25 petrol. It used to run for a period of time and then stop. Only a pull start will get it going again. so i decided to service it to start with. I replaced the plugs, the condenser and the points. Now i cant get a spark out of the bloody thing! Help!!!!! Have i compounded a problem or is it two problems seperatly?

how long would it run for ?

have you got 12v on the LT side of the coil ?

Itd run for about 30/40mins light work. 10 mins hard!

Haven't removed the wires from the coil so they should be o.k. I cant find any guides to make sure i've fitted the points correctly and got the gap set correctly. (never had to replace points b4!:()

dont knock it till you try, no/1have you by any chance cleaned the rotor arm with emry or sand paper, DONT.no/2inside the dissy cap there should be a carbon pin on a spring is that still there, no/3 switch ignition on remove dissy cap and get small screwdriver and place between the 2 points on the contact breaker = points. is there any spark or if it sparks where are the sparks they should be on the 2 points any where else it could be a duff condenser,in the mean time i will dig out a diagram and email to you if i can,

Hi brnocz, Havent used emry paper on any of it. Will check the carbon pin tonight.
The condenser is new.....
With the cable running from the coil pack to the bolt on one end of the points should there be any insulator between the cable from the coil+condenser and the bolt on the top?

When you replaced the pints did you put the insulators on in the right order.
Make sure that they(points) are not touching the base plate.

I removed the old points via the single screw on the old ones. Is there suposed to be insulators undernethe the plate the points are part of?

S o it should be alright then .Have you checked the gap ,and have you got a spark at the points.Did you remove the distributor when you changed the points. If you did ,did it go back exactly in the same position and are all connections good.If you have n't got aspark at the points you'll have to trace back and find out .Sorry I can't be more helpful.

never assume that you have fitted a new condenser that its ok if you have the old one try it,but you need to find out other things first when you switch ignition on is the power going to the coil,if not put a tester on the wire if no power there go further backif the wire and power is ther try another coil, then go to distrbuter check your points they are straight forward to do put a reply up and say what you have done,

Will do. Was going to do it last night but had to sort a disco with a dead water pump:(!

are the parts genuine lucas or cheap copies?
I replaced the whole ignition system inc dizzy not long ago with cheap bits, the faults i had were a crap condenser, crap coil, the points had resistance to one of the contact pads.
Like most things in life you gets what you pays for.

Right we now have it sorted! Firstly the condenser was dead. then i had put the condenser wire above the wire from the coil.duh!. then we got a week spark. so i changed the arm and the cap. better spark but not perfect so change all of the leads and plugs and problem sorted. When i find my digital camera i'll post some picks for anyone else with any simular probs.

Thanks for every one's help!

Pete
