cheers Freelance - found it... took it off and oh boy...... there is a single wire with a spade connector.. but the male tag has broken off from somewhere :-(

The wire is just an earth, it connects onto the metal tray that holds the pump and filter. They all break off, just use a ring connector and self tapper.

OK. so... I pulled the engine out.. look at the pics and please see if you can help?
the cowboys that screwed this freebie up need shooting - ad they are my nephews!!!
The wording with the photos is what MUST have been going through their minds when putting the enging into the car..... this (and other stuff found) could have quite easily have killed someone)
if you can see something that's missing, and you know where it should go. please let me know... most parts are missing..

Why would anyone only use one bolt on a starter motor?
bellhousing-starter.jpg

Let's stick a screwdriver into the IRD Cooler and see if we can break it :-(
IRD-Cooler.jpg
I can't get the pipe off.... yes it's needed again, but lets cut it..... (morons)
heater-pipe.jpg

WE don't need more than two finger tight bolts holding this IRD thingy on... do we???? (hypocrites)
IRD-Hanging-Off.jpg

surely this bracket isn't important enough to be bolted on.
OS-Drive-shaft-seal-whats-missing (2).jpg

we can't rememeber what goes here - so we won't fit it (them) and does it matter that we bent the driveshaft seal

Engine mounting on the cylinder head - OMG - this now needs helicoiling!!!
Cyl-Head-eng-Mount-area.jpg

just to add... the clutch cover bolts were actually there.....but half way out - less than finger tight!!

yup.... hopefully won't be when I've sorted it B34R..
Anyone know of a donor car which has had an engine go POP or a really hard rear end smash..
preferably Nottinghamshire or Derbyshire!
needs to be so cheap, that I can hear the birds singing!!

Cylinder head.... stripped threads due to misaligned engine mounting
Bottom engine mounting bolts loose and one fallen out into the bracket itself
The IRD was held on with 2 loose bolts... 3 missing
The starter motor.... why do they only hold the starters on with half of the bolts missing???

Main turbo heat shield missing

Clutch. ... feck in hell. . Every clutch plate bolt was hanging out on its last thread...

The heater pipe on the car had been cut to help them get the pipe off the heater matrix... and cut too far..

Off side front drive shaft. ... The splines are completely fecked. ...

Air con pipe broken under radiator
IRD cooler is badly bend and been rived with a screwdriver...
Gearbox hanging on by 3 loose bolts

Turbo will need replacing in 35 to 40 thousand miles.
I'm looking at a cost equal to a new bloody engine with this thing now.... I'm seriously considering scrapping it...

Such a shame.. but I do not know how I can afford 400 to 500 quid in bits.... It will take me 4 months to save and do it!!!!

And that's before new front wheel bearings.. New viscous coupling and brakes all round...

Sounds like you'd be better off putting it out of its misery at this point :(

I would do... but there is a lot of sentiment here... and being an ex-mechanic - I know not to get sentimental about cars.
The Car belonged to my dad.. he was the second owner of it, from when it was only 2 years old.
4 years ago, the clutch went, so he decided to get a local garage to fit a new one.
within 1/2 mile of the garage, the clutch packed up again, so the garage took it back and began investigating.
the found that the crank was moving back and forth, causing the clutch to fail.
The quoted a couple of grand for a second hand lump and the fitting, but dad declined and asked them to return the car to his home address.
my nepthews - (one pretending to be a mechanic and the other pretending to be useful) - told their Grandad that they could source and engine and fit it for him - so.... he told them to get the engine and he would pay them to do it.
Apparently (i was working away) the engine didn't like coming out of the car - and when they finally fitted the other one, they couldn't get it started - without linking out the starter solenoid.
long story short - the car was left on Dads garden (which is a grave yard for a Mondeo, P38 DSE and the Freebie) never to be touched again. sad thing is, my nephews STILL took the money for fitting the engine.
In June of this year; dad was diagnosed with Cancer; which is an aggressive strain. Dad asked me in June if I could get the Freelander up and running, because "it's a great car to have, does just short of 40 mpg and he would love to see it running again."
Dad is now at the stage where he can't walk, and cannot wash himself anymore - and for a very proud, active man who has been hands-on doing everything all of his life - I know this hurts him badly.
Anyway... I live 50 miles from dad, so I paid for the car to be recovered to my house (I don't have a garage; just a concrete driveway, and open air) and begun the task of getting it running..
After repairing wiring looms, replacing inter-cooler hoses; diesel pipes etc. I got the car turning over and finally firing up on the key.
I sourced all of the water leaks, and tightened up hoses and got the water to NOT leak out. fired up the car and had no drive..... the rest.. is in every post i have made.
so...
Yes B34R, I agree the car should be put out of it's misery; but sadly I have to disagree too.

to update the followers.
Getting a donor engine really helped... I asked the guy selling it, if I could pull it out myself...... I kept every single nut and bolt while doing so.
lastweek, the engine and a new box went in... I'm damned certain that I had to use 15 bolts from the salvage list due to them being missing before.
every single bolt is now in place.. every bracket... and it runs beautifully..

Well done mate, thanks for keeping us updated. Has your dad seen it yet? If so I hope he is proud of you for what you've done, he should be but maybe never knew the mess was made of it.
