ok, went to go to work this morning, turned the key one click, ignition on, wait for light to go out, turn again to start, and nothing, absolutly nothing. didnt even try to turn over.
these are things i'm 99% certain that are not wrong.
battery
relay
starter motor and solinoid (they are only 4 months old)

any suggestions please guys, and the winning contender will recieve a prize in the post. who ever states the winning problem and solution first is the winner.

this messes up work for me and means no money!

thank you all

Ignition switch - I've had the same problem in the past.
Check yer paynes wirin diagram and then check that you get the correct voltages at the back of the switch in each position, using a multimeter.

yeh, have a feeling u may be rite there, i thought that but wanted to see if someone else wud say it.
well if u r rite u win, we'll see......

I reakon battery even though you said not. I have had the same prob and the battery didnt have much voltage in it but the lights still came on.

i thought that, wanted to double check and completely count that out so hooked up another battery and exactely the same happened...

Our Defender 90 did this regularly when the SMALL wire to the starter motor slipped off the lucar terminal of the solenoid.

Go for the simple things first!

did the ignition click when you turned it over? could be the bendix thingy ma-bobby in the starter motor stuck on the flywheel (its meant to return back into the body once started)... leave the thing in gear and rock it back and forth, should free it up. or **** it with 'ammer.

id go with starter motor, ignition or engine earth strap.

I'm with CharlesY ickle wire on top of starter with a spade connection has wiggled off common problem on my missus 200Tdi If it has come loose you need to give it a little crimp and shove it back on

well well kids,
game over.
it was the spade connector and it was a ****ing bastard to put back on. i'm very happy now and can go to work now!
so whos the winner?

I think you'll find the correct term for that particular spade connector is a "Contra rotating straddle pin" and seeing as it was me who gave it it's correct name and answered your query most accurately I would like to point out that I should be the recipient of the aforementioned goodies.
