I have quite a few mods that I want to do to my old 90, but can anyone help me draw up a decent order?! The way I am planning it at the mo:

1 - suspension lift. Im thinkin of getting a complete kit, + 2inch from britpart comes with all springs and shocks, corrected radius arms, and bushes. part #: DA4288. around £650. But I mite say stuff it to a lift, and get 4 new standard height springs and shocks, and polybushes all round, because I think the springs are pretty tired after 20 years. Any thoughts, is it worth lifting? If I am goin to be chucking logs etc. in the back, would I be better of getting a standard height heavy duty suspension kit?

2 - new tyres to fit onto my disco steel rims...bfg mud terrains, not sure what size to get but I think bigger is better so prob as big as I can get away with.

3 - TDI engine transplant and possibly disco rear axle and transfer box as well. I favour the 300 to the 200TDI but chances are I will end up getting a 200 as they are a fair bit cheaper and bolt straight on the existing mounts. I know a good garage where I should be able to get the work done fairly cheap.

4 - a set of four spotlights and a roofbar

5 - Winch and winch bumper. The britpart 12000i that you can get off paddocks looks pretty good, and cheap. anyone got any experience of this winch or any other suggestions?

I use the 90 for work as a tree surgeon, as well as the odd greenlane and pay n play day. To be honest it will do a lot more miles on road than off, but I can put up with extra body roll from a lift, noisy tyres etc.

The main reason I am planning on a TDI and possibly a disco transfer box is so the vehicle will be more capable of goin on dual carrigeways/motorways. I would be quite happy cruising at 60- 70mph, but whilst the truck will manage 70 down a hill and 60 on the flat, the engine is really screaming and its not good.

So how does my list look, would you add / remove / edit anything?

cheers, Chris

£650 for a 2" lift is a lot of money. If you do go for a lift You don't need castor correction arms for a 2" lift I'd just get the springs & shocks and some spring retaining plates. I've just been out with 4 others lads who all had lifts and big tyres we were in a standard disco on 235/55/16's and we only got stuck once and that was because of the towbar. I'd fit HD springs and standard shocks less then £100.

Yeh I think I mite do that, its certainly a great deal less money. Is it worth replacing all the bushes with polybushes as well? There is a lot of body roll on the corners, I know its got a high centre of gravity but it really is bad. Worse than my mums disco 1.

Good set of polybushes is always a good idea. but don't buy the deflex ones get a cheaper set they're just as good and half the price.

Most of em are easy to do though there's one or 2 you might have trouble with. The springs & shocks are an easy job to do. get new turrret rings as well as your bound to shear some studs off

sorry to be stupid but what are turret rings?
these things.....

it's the things at the top of the front shocks.

Cheers.

So in light of the advice given by redhand et al, my list is now as follows:

1 - Suspension, standard height heavy duty.

2 - Tyres, probably 265/75 BFG M/Ts.

3 - TDI transplant.

4 - Winch & bumper

5 - spotlights....other bits etc etc

Well, so far this is what I've spent money on in order.

1. 2 new prop shafts.

2. Diff guard and Steering guard

3. Rock and tree sliders (me an a mate made em from scrap)

4. Silver Modulars with 235/85 Machos on

What to spend next has just suddenly changed.

1. New front hub bearings after they collapsed this morning after last weeks little near miss on M1 :(

2. Noo exhost as it is starting to blow and is almost fouling n/s rear tyre

3. Polybushes and noo diffs (well, recon ones anyhoo)

4. Extended breathers

Going to keep suspension as standard as shocks are only 12 months old, and old springs read terrain better when trialling. Just need to find some way of lifting it about 1/2" without replacing shocks or springs...

I think you can get spacers which you weld either above or below the spring mounts, cant really remember though.

I want to get to get a snorkel and breathers as well, I forgot to mention that. Probably after the tdi transplant.

Part of the reason why Im keen to get HD suspension is cos im gona turn her into a truckcab, so I wana be able to chuck a bit more weight in the back more comfortably.
