please help me auto box changing down when it should'nt

hi everyone does anybody have any suggestions for me my freelander td 4 auto has started changing down through the gears and there has been clouds of black smoke from the exhaust i have also noticed there is a small filter in a clear plastic case behind the engine with a black pipe attached to one end but nothing the other end should this go somewhere????? any advice would be greatly appreciated. :confused: rich25
 
Just to be less technical:-

The little filter is exactly as it should be, leave it alone.

There are 3 rubber pipes twixt Intercooler, engine and Turbo.
A hole in any one will give exactly your symptoms and fill yer intake with black slimey oil.

You can bodge it to get you home by wrapping tight with duct tape, best to change all 3 at the same time.

While you are in there, clean up all the intake and manifold and fit an EGR Bypass - you'll be glad you did. ;)
 
thank you for help and yes it was a split in the pipe getting parts tomorrow thanks very much you have saved me a big headache lol.
 
starting to realise that about the spending:( i still cant help liking the car though for some reason:) how often do you think these pipes should be changed?

Taking the view that I prefer to change them at home than stop on a motorway, I changed at 5 years/ 40k miles. On later (04) cars it's more expensive as the pipe to/from the intercooler comes complete with a temperature sensor.

As j free says bout every three years , you can get silicone upgrades. . . . er spending. . . .youve bin saved a fortune by the folks in ear . . . .ope you's not moanin Earthling:( :( otherwise yer mite have to meet Mrs Ming . . . . .then yer can moan

not moaning at all im glad of all the advice i get on here from you guys and no matter how much trouble the car gives me i just cant help liking it for some reason (is that a bad thing lol):) :)
