I've got a 94 Defender 90 and I have My MOT on Friday. Most things have gone well in the pre mot servicing I'm doing but I have some play or spongeyness in the steering.

Any idea what might cause that?

steering shaft UJs , drop arm ball joint , track rod ends - check your steering box mounts too ( not heard of a box coming loose on a landy before tho ) .

get someone to lightly shake the steering and start from the top down checking for any play , also see how the input shaft works in coalation with the drop arm from the steering box ( might have a warn steerig box ) .

Thanks. I put a new steering damper in this evening and new track rod ends tomorrow. Drop arm new a year ago. Bearings checked and tightened two weeks ago. Tried reaching in to the wheel and looking at uj's under hood but can't see anything slack in the steering arm. Yet to drive it with new damper, but the list of stuff will help me focus my search.

Still have play, despite going through the whole list. i changed my track rod ends and now i'm pulling to the right slightly, despite measuring and counting exposed threads and turns.

If i am pulling to the right and the adjustable track rod is over on the left, does it need to be wound in a bit. I have 4 threads on display, how many turns should i give it, or should i take it somewhere and have it done? i don't have much time though as my MOT is at 1.30 Friday.
