I have an old 90 with the four bolt steering box. My steering wheel has a little play in it which makes the steering a bit vague whilst on the road! Also my power steering is bloody heavy. I was wondering if my box needs a seal kit, and if so does anyone know of a good online guide on how to do it.

Oh yeh forgot to mention, the other day after coming off a green lane I was driving when all of a sudden it pulled left and nearly put me into a hedge! Little bit worrying and is why I need to try and sort my problem!

Are all your ball joints OK - I had a similar problem and it was drag link ball joint related.

Is your drop arm on tight, if its loose it will give play.

I would not bother with a seal kit, I would leave it to the pro's and even at that the GOOD pros, that National Power Steering or whatever they are called are a right bunch of idiots.

I am not saying it cannot be done, its like injection pumps, they say not to do them but they are a skoosh. However this is the steering, if it fails the chances of serious injury or death are obviously much higher.

Sorry for the slow reply, on holiday at the moment in Somerset with the land rover! So I am guessing you do not advise doing the seals and just replace the box completly!

When I had a sudden tug to one side it was the wheel bearing seizing up. Very scary.

If the box isn't leaking why does it need re-sealing? It may just need adjusting, but as mentioned before check the ball joints, swivels and drop arm nut (I have had this come loose on both a disco and defender, It makes a boat seem to have positive steering in comparison.)

:D
