Tempting as they are a heck of a lot cheaper than a Webasto!!!

I'd rather a water heater that I could run to the block and to a heater matrix with a separate blower, that's an ideal, but at this price it might be a much better solution to the camper heating situation?

I messaged the seller of these and they say they consume 1ltr/hr diesel but am waiting for max amp draw to see how much power I need to run it with the engine off.

i am not planning on sleeping in my landy,i will just use as additional heater[instant heat] when driving

think what @dieseldog69 means is u can get a remote/ timer or mobile phone app to control the fbh , then just start it up on cold mornings so when u go out to the car it’s nice and warm as it pre heats the engine , prior to actually starting the engine

but sometimes needs an aux battery to prevent the main battery from draining

with some of the remotes u can also fit a sim card inside for tracking purposes , that’s on the webasto so don’t know how these compare

i will get my coat , lol

@gstuart you're right mate, I like the idea of being able to set it on a timer for say 06:30, walk out the door at 06:45 and step into a warm cabin that isn't freezing and then sitting there waiting for the engine to get up to temp before defrosting the screen.

It could easily be linked into the heater box and set to defrost the screen from the get go, would also stop condensation forming when you step in wet from rain or your breath freezing on the screen.

The nice thing about your D3 fitted with the Webasto Garry is that it is warming the coolant from the start and will make life easier on your engine.

I'm not concerned about the diesel as it would use the separate tank and be filled with red diesel which I can get sensible amounts (a gallon per week is plenty) free from work.

My concern is with the current draw and how much power it is going to pull from the battery prior to me starting the engine, a second battery/split charge/2nd alternator will enable you to set it to work without fear of draining your main starter battery.

wasn’t sure if that was indeed what u was going to do, lol

but some of the other reasons i fitted a split charge system , assume FBH will pull a min of 12.5 VDC on start up so i suppose it depends on the batteries A/H to how long it lasts , alas i know these D3s are indeed very power hungry

will be interesting to see what that guy comes back with ref the volts
 
I have just visited Planars site ,they quote approx. £429 for 2kw heater and £600 or so for there engine pre warm version
and will match any other sellers price. Now the planars that i see on eBay are approx. half of the above price
[They also state that planars do not sell on eBay ,amazon etc.].
I have now sent an email to planers importers asking about the above to see if eBay versions are genuine .

Very interesting!!!

Please keep us posted, I am in the market for a diesel night heater and if they are genuine at £250 ~ £300 they are half the cost of a Webby and very good value.

Be interesting to see if anyone has taken one on and put it to the test.
 
out of curiosity i just looked at my webasto heater on there web site , ref, the cost of the unit and spares

holy mother of god , some prices are eye watering

hope all goes well with the proposed fbh and will an interesting read

For what its worth, IMO give the the ebay cheap Chinese snide versions a swerve, they are cheap copies with no regard to safety, they use the word Planar like they use 'genuine or OEM, (PS some are 240V hence the 'inverter not included' statement yet showing it in the sales pictures!)

Genuine Planar units have a much higher current requirement, on average as much as around 40% on the 4kw and 35% on the 2kw. So I would not buy them anyway.

If you are going to the trouble of fitting a personal fan assisted, encapsulated diesel flamethrower, to your truck / camper/ boat then fit a good / safe one or buy a huge fire extinguisher and a gas mask! :eek::D

Stick to Propex/Heatsource, Eberspacher, Airtronic etc
We all know get what you pay for etc but with these things its really not worth the risk, if you hunt around you can pick up one new for £420, or recond for around £250.

I have repaired and fitted most of the well known brands (LPG and Diesel) to plenty of campers and boats, but wont touch the Chinese copies, just recommend its binned as unserviceable.

Back in the 'eighties the night heater in the truck I drove had a habit of running the batteries down overnight to the point when the engine wouldn't turn over at start-up. Many a 'phone call to the depot was made for a local breakdown outfit to supply a jump start as pushing 38t wasn't an option :(

I am running a split charge system with aux battery but it worries me that there will be cold nights and it will need to run fairly frequently and so deplete the battery frequently, continual complete discharge isn't good for batteries either :oops:

New system will be running 200ah 1000CCA battery with a second 200A alternator to charge & run the aux system so it should have capacity and the benefit of being stand alone means the original discovery system remains unchanged.

Hi ,just to stick my snout in,I've had webastosfor years in lorries and if the voltage drops to a certain level they cut off so as not to drain your battery,it's built into them,don't know about any other make though

for the life of me u can’t remember if there is a low voltage protect, know if the warning light comes on for low fuel it won’t come on , is the first vehicle to have a webasto and got to admit is suprising how quickly the cabin heats up ,

know i can get a timer for mine but in all honesty is around £200 and just can’t justify that
 
Most Webo's have a operating of between 11-15V.
Heaters that are 'marine rated' are lower though at 9-13V.

many 'marine' units find there way into campervans!

I was actually going to poke my head into the local marina's by the site I'm working to see if they had anything floating around or knew of someone with something?

@KISSMYAURA as you know your way around these things and me being only marginally competent with electronics, I wonder is there a way of fitting a low voltage switch in a particular circuit to save the battery?
