That is how it should be. If his is the same. If he holds the engine on half throttle then blips it to full throttle he should see waste gate move. If it does he is getting good boost pressure. If the engine still lacks power maybe the boost fuel pin is tight in the pump or the diaphragm has an hole in it.
Tried this and the wastegate does not move, I can move it manually so it's not seized.... are we reaching new turbo time?

You need to move from half throttle to full throttle up and down quickly a few times then it should move. Maybe blip was not the correct way of putting it. ;)

is the wastegate itself cracked or broken?

Just cos the arm is moving doesnt mean the actual wastegate flap is

If the waste gate flap is cracked or broken and leaking, you will never get the actuator to move. Because the turbo will never reach full boost.

hmmm i dunno then, that was a wild guess lol

although the OP said he can only get the wastegate to move by hand not by itself so maybe i am not far off the mark? isnt he down on power? could that be lack of boost?

I've managed to source a known working turbo complete on manifold, so I'll collect that on Saturday and see what gives worst case I've got a spare, thanks for your input fellas

Yeah it may well be lack of boost. But if waste gate is leaking it will never move actuator. Turbo will never attain full boost. So you were along the right lines.

Old Turbo on Manifold removed, all Nuts/studs came off easier than expected apart from the right hand inlet manifold bolt grrrrrr... ended up having to get some Irwin bolt extractors as the head was chewed, Ran out of time over the weekend so will fit the "new" one on Saturday and hopefully problem solved, On removal i found lots of play in the turbo, both side to side and back and forth, the new one is solid :)

There should be a very small bit of side to side (radial) movement as turbo uses an oil film bearing to 'float' the spindle (which is only there when you have oil pressure), but no back / forth (axial) play. Good luck

Cheers
I was gutted that it took so long to remove that one bolt, really wanted it running this weekend, but hey ho I'll potter about after work cleaning bits and pieces ready for the rebuild Saturday

Probably a stupid question but if I don't ask????
The "new" turbo with manifold is identical externally to the old one but I've noticed they have a different vane configuration? ? Will this be a problem or did garrett change the configuration at some point?
Cheers

A boost gauge would have been cheaper, some engines wont open the wastegate unless there is load on the engine, mine wont , so trying to get the turbo to work by revving the engine isn't the best way to do it.
Also just because the turbo isn't working doesn't mean its broken.

Probably just continuous improvements over the years, your original will be 20 years behind the times as there will have been a lot of advances in 'fluid dynamics' in that time.

The turbo is knackered, masses of play in all directions and mangled vanes, unfortunately my tablet won't let me upload pictures

Turbo changed today and jobs a goodun, best 80 quid I've had to spend... it now thinks it's a Ferrari
Thanks for all the replies and suggestions guys
