Has anyone in the vicinity of Leeds or Hull got an old lump of rear cross member for a disco 1 lying around that they don't want. I need it to use as a profile/template for an heavy duty crossmember I want to make for my Disco. Got an Arc and a Mig welder and planning on using 2.8mm steel. I will be folding the steel as much as possible and welding what won't fold. Also have a brother who is a very good welder. (He used to weld HGV trailers and do chassis extentions for 'tilt and slide' recovery trucks.) and he owes me as I've just done loads of work at his house which I did for free.
I want to make the cross member before I cut my old one out as the disco is my everyday vehicle. The plan is to continue the crossmember into the rear floor area about 6" and then remove the rear seats and fit a HD custom made raised floor which extends upto the back of the front seats, with a bulkhead fitted ala defender style and also to fit a winch tray into the rear floor and some storage into the rear footwells.
