Hi,

I've searched the forums but couldn't find what I am after.

Can someone please post a picture of an example of a chassis where repair is not an option? or even one where it is repairable? So i can compare mine to the photo.

I ask because I've bought a 90 and am unsure whether the chassis is repairable or is not. To me, i would say it's okay and could do with a couple of patches and and a new rear crossmember however i could be underestimating the extent.

I will post some pictures of my own one once I find my camera.

Thanks,

Jasper

The problem is that anything is repairable, it just depends on how much time, effort and money you want to throw at it.

My old 90 was a little rough...

And it was worse when the rotten stuff was cut out...

But it was repaired.

Hi Jasper,

Heres a look at mine before i tackled it, it was repairable, but quite time consuming (and im sure expensive if you cant do it yourself) but doable. i needed a new rear crossmember, some patches to the chassis, a body crossmember and i decided to build up the outriggers with thicker steel rather than replace them...

there was a good bit of welding, cleaning, sand blasting, wire brushing etc etc etc and you are guaranteed to find more than you bargained for, but as far as im concerned, anything is fixable its just a question of whether you have the time/skills/money/patience to do it....

What ever rust or rust holes you can see I can guarantee there will be at least double if not 3 or 4 times more that you can't see but will become apparent with poking. A 5p sized hole in my x-member became a 10cm x 10cm hole by the time I took it back to good metal

Hi Jasper have a look at this should give you an idea of whats saveable.

thats my project 90 all done now chassis was replaced as my budget stretched to a galvanised one, theres a few pics of what i classed as irreparable. ;)

Really interesting read Sam, a heck of a load of work it seems! Did you ever compile a list of parts that you bought and would be happy to share with me as our Landys seem to be very similar in terms of condition so knowing what you bought would help me a great deal?

Thanks all you other guys. I've pressure washed it and put it up a ramp and had a poke with a screw driver. It doesn't appear to be as bad as I first thought however Flat i'll proceed with caution!
I have to replace the bulkhead anyway as that would be a mammoth undertaking to rescue, so i will be able to get a far better look at the chassis then.
Thanks again.
Jasper

yeah if its anything like mine it wont be easy or cheap :(
I've not got a list of such sorry. it really depends on how far gone it is, some people just lift off the body in one piece which seems easiest but my bulkhead and tub needed work so that wasn't really an option.

to answer the question as to what i brought basically every conceivable part that can be fitted to a land rover hundreds of nuts and bolts, suspension bushes, springs, shocks, all the axle parts and all new brake and clutch components. ;)

Mine was like this on three of the spring hangers..

I cut out the rot and replaced the inner chassis

then the outer and the spring hanger

then a good coating of dintrol

I also did both footwells

What's the matter with your bulkhead??

I got rid of my old Defender as the chassis seemed to be rusting from the inside out. There were 'one-or-two' repairs that needed doing, then it all looked sound. When doing some work on the front suspension I jacked it up off the axle, put an axle stand under the chassis rail with a length of 3x2 between and gently lowered the landy. The 3x2 snapped and the chassis bent - turns out it was paper thin as it had rotted out! I patched that up and got shot!

I would say that if you've got holes and the blukhead's really bad AND you've got the funds, time and space, re-chassis it. It'll increase the value of it umpteen times and you'll never have to worry about the chassis again, well not for a good forty years plus...

Well yesterday i removed seats and seat box along with all the floor pans and I was greeted with quite a pleasant sight of a good chassis midsection as in no areas that are causing me concern - I went over it with a screw driver and a pointy hammer.
Today I plan to get everything else off to will be able to inspect the chassis properly.

Thanks for the replies and the pictures, they've really helped.
