Morning All, my 200Tdi seems to have developed a rather odd problem.

Has only happened twice now, but after giving her a good run on the motorway, 70mph-ish for about 30 mins, then slowing to a stop for traffic I get an almighty clatter from (it sounds like, can’t be sure though) the front of the gearbox. Then it runs clunky in start stop traffic until another run where it seems to clear up again. I think clunky is tye best way to describe it. It actually feels a bit like the engine is kicking back in its mounts a bit.

Problem being, I can’t get out when in traffic to check and as much as I’ve tried I can’t replicate the problem. Has anyone else ever come across such a thing?

Get under it and check the propshaft UJs and the sliding joint...

When did you last grease them ? Serviced regular ?

It all makes a difference you know ...

First time was just motorway driving. Second time I'd been using low ratio and diff lock pulling a heavy load in a field.

It'll be getting it's first service (in my owbership) this week and will be checking and greasing everything then.

Thanks.

Were these incidents after being off road and changing from hi/lo ratio?

I had a clattery sound from mine on Friday night, It is in the garage and a couple of ujs have been changed but the noise is still there apparently.

Apart from recently changing the back diff oil seal I did put it into low box while in traffic which is the first time I have done so since I bought it. Next day the clattering began after 2 miles on the road.

I would be interested if you have any experience of the use of hi/lo ratio causing such symptoms.

Yeah, that's why I asked. A few years back now, can't remember. If I'd had difflock on or I'd been in low ratio or possibly both. Sounded like the engine was going to drop out, very scary.

Props are well worth greasing monthly, especially if you venture off road or deep wading

I'd also check the transfer box output bearings and diff input bearings .. all behind the flanges, unfortunately!
