Does anyone know how much weight I can carry in the back of A Defender 90 Hardtop?, Suspension is Standard not Heavy Duty , Thinking of a 900KG weight block I need to collect, just wondering if it would manage?

if its any help i had a ton bag of sand in the back of a 110 pick up with a ton towed on a trailer at the same time and it was no problem......bit slow up hills though....lol

Edit: should add i got standard suspen. tdi engine if that makes a difference

Payload weights for an hardtop are, (according to the handbook)
2.5 petrol 871kg
2.5 Diesel 839kg
3.5 petrol 875kg

I'm sure a few more kilo's wont make that much difference. only problem you'll get is if your unlucky enough to get pulled in by a VOSA/HMRC road block and weighed. which is unlikely but it does happen on occasion.

Thanks for the reply, ill give it a go , if you see a fully laden Silver XS 90 Defender heading North from Nottingham to Durham this weekend it will probably be me with a 900Kilo weight block as a back seat passenger!!

You cannot say what the maximum payload is.

You CAN find out what are the maximum permitted weights

1. on axle # 1 the front axle
2. on axle # 2 the back axle
3. the whole vehicle maximum gross weight (no trailer) on both axles together, and please note, 1 + 2 might NOT equal 3 in this situation.

You can legally load it up until weight 3 is reached, as long as NEITHER weights 1 or 2 are exceeded in the process.

The lighter the vehicle can be made, the more you can carry, so if you have 100 kilos of tools and junk in there, unload it!

There must by law be a plate fastened to the car showing these weights, and as it happens, the maximum weight when towing of the whole lot.

If yours is a 90, you may be disappointed at the permitted load weight IN the car, but you might be impressed at the gross train weight with trailer, which may be well over SIX TONNES depending on your model of Def 90.

This is copied out of the Landrover 90 110 handbook and gives axle weights and payloads It does also say that they represent the maximum weights as any extras or options fitted to a standard vehicle will reduce the max payload. As I said in my post they are the payload for a 90 oviously if he's carrying tools hi-lift waffles etc then that weight will be part of the payload.

Good table - pity about the formatting by the time it arrived here!
He'll not be too far away to carry his load.
