Pattern vs OEM

I fitted a new Delphi pump today but I also had a new Britpart part (could have been allmakes) to compare it to, the difference is so obvious its not even funny, especially when the Delphi pump was less than a tenner more..

Id expect the pattern part to last what , a year? maybe two? Delphi part maybe 10 years?

I also had a Britfart fuel filter sent by mistake and bought a new Delphi filter, again the difference wasn't funny at all, the genuine filter that the Delphi filter replaced was exactly the same as the Delphi unit, I tried to use the Britfart filter as a stop gap until the new one arrived, it leaked straight away so I had to use the old genuine one until the new one arrived.

Who stocks Delphi stuff? As most retailers supply Blue box O ****e as standard if you don't ask.

Google search is your friend

Plenty of stockists, there will be one near you, or order off the net. Plenty about, and cheap as chips

I got a box of 50 Delphi 296 filter elements off the net, they worked out less than £1.50 each

I got the pump from Craddocks, when a supplier lists a part as OEM its worth giving them a call to find out who it is. Its also worth pricing up genuine, you might be surprised.

With things like filters i only use genuine Land Rover. For the sake of £5 extra id rather have a Gen one fitted

from what i understand oem is also a minefield.

it seems some people class oem as 'the manufacturer once supplied a part for landrover'.. but not necessarily that part. so :shrug:

others come branded or are the same as branded but without the marks.

I have been through 2 britpart lift pumps in 4 months and both failed, one of them did this......

The pump lever bent of the cam!

I fitted a bearmach one and run perfect since. The difference in price was £3. I use britpart filters and pay £1.50 each for them and change them every 2 weeks (I run on bio) and they have been fine.

price is a guide, but only that.
if its too cheap its probably ****e,
if its expensive you might be getting ripped off for ****e
even suppliers reputation doesnt help.
I go for a named brand

What it should be.

Genuine: comes in LR box with a 80% price hike.

OEM: Original Equipment Manufacturer, should be the same thing as the genuine, but straight from the manufacturer in their box.

Pattern: Something that resembles the part you want, and should fit.

Though OEM seems to be getting cloudy, I ordered some OEM/Timken wheel bearings.
They arivved in the blue box, still with the G suffix, looked at the bearings, no makers mark, only the part number, which after judicial googling turned out to be timken.
What irritates me more is ebay where you buy it described as "Timken" or "Deplhi" only to find in the small print they clain i"its the same as, but not actually" ie cheap ****e.
I buy more and more from LR direct if buying online, there you can choose your level of pattern or oem, not yet had an issue. not necessarily the cheapest, but you get what you ordered (to press anyway)

+1. That is pretty much what I find. Unless it specifically says who the manufacturer is on ebay I don't buy it, as it always ends up as britpart.

LRDirect is the way to go, I got some stuff from them yesterday and they even seem to have sent me 2 shock absorber hangers instead of 1, which is nice

Though saying that, I wanted a door seal, it was £40 on LRDirect and managed to get the same Bearmach seal on ebay for £20

I don't tend to buy anything in a Land Rover box if I can avoid it, simply because of the stupid prices they charge. Unless there are no acceptable alternatives.

I try and use OEM (another vote for LRDirect) wherever possible for any parts that are remotely critical. Unless there are no acceptable alternatives.

I only use Pattern parts for non critical components like trim for example. Unless there are no alternatives.

At the end of the day its a balancing act, to fit parts which are of acceptable quality whilst controlling costs. The more experience you have the more likely you are to make the correct choice but even then you occasionally end up buying rubbish and doing the job twice.

The two lads that run my local indie are a good source of wisdom on what parts are best. I do ask them and they will give me their recommendation (and a price).

I was doing some wheel bearings years ago after having one lock up on me, I bought genuine locking washers from the local main dealer, an extra 25p but the difference in thickness and strength to the ****ty ones that were on there previously was very obvious.
I don't think genuine things like filters, washers etc etc are stupidly expensive, I think pattern parts are stupidly cheap.

i allways use and suggest others do, timken roller bearings whether you buy them in a britpart box or timken or lr box it doesnt matter except the price of the same parts, if they are timken it will be marked on the bearing,

This is how Paddocks describe their OEM parts.

This product is manufactured by a company that has either manufactured for Land Rover in the past or is currently manufacturing for Land Rover.

It doesn't say ''manufactured this part for Land Rover in the past or is currently manufacturing this part for Land Rover''.

As far as my own 90 is concerned, Delphi stuff is genuine!

CAV injection equipment was standard on all diesel landrovers for 40 years, until the introduction of Bosch gear when Defenders came in!

When CAV folded, their entire parts operation was taken over by Delphi. You can see the little CAV logo in the red strip on this Delphi filter, not in very good focus I am afraid.

That's true, but their wording could be interpreted as Britfart once made a seal for land rover, so anything made by them is made by an OEM company.

Were AC Delco taken over by Delphi? AC Delco made lift pumps for Land Rover before Delphi started to.
