Hi everyone,

Is it possible to change the lower seal on the steering box whilst its on the vehicle?

I have all the tools including the arm remover plus the seals and ACE replacement fluid.

Thanks
Mark

I have done this in situ a couple of times. After arm off next is remove old seal. Taking circlip off and then starting engine and turning wheel has blown old seal out.
To get the new seal in I made up a simple press of two tubes that has an inner the same size as the outer rim of the seal. This fits inside a slightly larger tube who's job is to guide the seal into place and is shorter than the press tube by the amount the seal needs to go in.
Tubes made the right length along with some washers and you can use the large nut on the box to do the pressing.

Spot on there, I'd just add that it is worth using quality parts or you will do it again in 6 months time, and get plenty Plus Gas around the circlip (cos you really don't want to bust it like I did)

I have recently replaced ALL the ball joints and bushes on the front lol including the one on the drop arm with the circlip and thats was a bigger itself im using bearmach for everything now thanks for the help

If its leaking I wud pour in some brake fluid. Will swell the seal and stop the leak. Thats if the box is working ok.
I have just replaced the box on my Landy and should have tried that first. My mate swears by it. Dont shoot the messenger !!

I got an extra two mot’s from a leaky steering box by using a cap full of brake fluid a couple of weeks before the mot
