Just wondering if anybody has replaced bearings / seals in a 300tdi PAS pump (not the steering box: the actual pump). Replacement with a new unit seems automatic. Is it that much a pain to source the parts? Or is it hard to get open up?

Anybody out there given it a try and willing to talk about it?

Sounds like you might be!!:D
I just replaced mine, not really worth the time / effort as I think you need to push the pulley flange off to get the bearing out and seals / gaskets aren't readily available without a bit of searching. You also need to consider that if the bearing is worn what are the rest of the internals like, a failed pump will leave you stranded as you will also lose the water pump if it throws the belt. I prefer reliability  as opposed to saving a couple of quid and risking a potential breakdown.

Your reliability vs saving a buck point is obviously true, but here (Morocco) that f***** pump costs 220 sterling (for Britpart!), and it's going to be a couple of months before I can one at a more reasonable price. So if I can press out a bearing and stick another one to get an extra six months from the pump, well, that would be a good thing.

So far it's just a bit of play in the drive shaft. Don't they squeal and chatter before they actually blow up?

What happens if you try and press it out and bugger the casing or damage it beyond repair, you will be really stuffed then. If I were in your position I would either leave it alone or have a look to see if there is a way to run a shorter aux belt in case you need to remove the pump completely if it fails (or you break it),at least you would still be able to drive the fan / pump and alt without power steering.

Oh yes. Many a piece from Paddock is bolted to this Landy but delivery to Morocco isn't really any option. I'm hugely envious of folks who get boxes of reasonably priced parts delivered to their doorstep within days! Next time I'm in England, I'll grab a pump and bring it home. In the meanwhile - since the renewal option doesn't sound palatable - I'll look around for a shorter belt and cross my fingers.

1413 mm is supposed to be the right length to bypass the steering pump. Anybody try this / know a part number for the belt? How long does the linkage between the steering box and the wheel last without the pump?

In your situation if you are picking up a pump on your next visit pick up a ZF made one rather than BP (a few quid more but they are OEM). Fitted one to mine and it was a straight forward fit and all the pipes / unions aligned straight away, I think some people have had issues with the cheaper ones because the inlet pipe connection is not always at the right angle. Power steering box should be fine for a while without the pump as long as there is still some fluid in there to keep the seals wet (make sure to seal the pipes if you remove the pump). Without the pump connected the pipes will push out fluid the first time you turn the steering so be ready to catch it.

At £60 postage I would see if I could include some other spares in the same buy, may up the postage a little but saves having to spend another 60 next time around. Only issue would be what spares to buy, important gaskets, seals and hoses that might not be readily available where you are and are worth thinking about.
