Steering pump
After three years the PAS pump decided it had had enough in the middle of an off roading day.The pully and the pump bearing appears to have come forward by about 3/4 inch and dumped all the fluid.

What i'd like to know is should i be looking for secondary problems now this has happened ?

The viscous fan bearing has also gone and will need replacing .I had been running the bus without a fan because a blade had broken off.I put it back on during the snow period as i ended up towing and pulling at which point the engine started heating up .But i never took it off afterwards .Could this have caused the PAS pump bearing to fail ?

Had also just treated it to a new fan belt tensioner 3 weeks before could this have caused my current problems ?

There is a little play in the idler bearing should i renew this ? what is the bearing part number ,Is it easy to change ?

new pump on order from Island £50 inc vat

New power steering pump put on and its never been so light on the wheel ,One finger ,Should have done this 2 years ago.£58 for pump and new fan belt .
Priming the pump proved somewhat harder than i thought .Primed steering box OK but had to rev engine before to get the pump to prime .
Seems Ok so far but any advice on first posting will help calm worries.
Pump bearing had gone altogether but found no bits in the reservoir ??? inside oil reservoir was clean aswell ??

The key wears on the pump shaft (it's only a small piece of 3mm dia steel) which then allows the shaft to move forward.
This happened to me last year and I shredded the belt but the pump was still working ok and no loss of fluid.

Have a spare disco for parts so no cost.

Thanks for the reply Sprintmaker
My lads have a defender which is a lot heavier than mine was .But still works .Having changed mine and seen what a difference its made I'm thinking of changing theirs .Just in case .
Does anyone know how these pumps behave when starting to fail ?

Just looked at the old impelor and can see the key has broken causing the impelor to spin on the shaft. The burn marks testify to that. How long it was like this for is anyones guess.

The bearing inner race has also broken which then allowed the pully to move forward

For me the pump was not repairable .I think i had 2 problems .The first was the drive key had gone which allowed the pump to slip on the shaft and prevented the full oil pressure from being developed resulting in lack of steering assistance .This i think lasted for some time ( a year or more)
The second problem was that the pump bearing broke allowing the pully to move forward by about 5/8 ths of an inch .I think it was the bearing going that twisted the fan belt and broke it .
So for me get a new pump .i think it was £50 plus the new oil .

my advice is get a 2nd hand pump or buy a new one, the time it takes to try amd rebuild one aint worh it, i took my old one to bits and to be honist when i removed the shaft all the needle bearing came out.

plus is i think you will waste more time trying to fix it than its worh

Thanks for all the help. I got a second had pump from a 98 disco.

When I took the old one apart it was perfect inside apart from the key which was half worn away. I think if I had a piece of rod or a needle from a needle roller bearing I could have put it back together working. Still got it as a spare.

Not exactly job to do as there is not much room to wield a spanner down there.
