Ive just brought a 51 plate TD5, and worked out that although there are parking sensors fitted they don't work and the plug is just hidden up behind the bumper and not connected (bumper as been changed at a guess.

Anyway my question is, what would i need to get it work work as a genuine system, or would it be more cost effective to install an aftermarket system, and if that was the case would the existing sensors work, or would the new sensors fit in the existing sensor holes.

another little niggle is the wing mirrors electrically fold in fine but when i go to extend them they don't go anywhere, and if i hold the switch they extend, then fold back in when i release meaning i have to get out and manually extend them, is this a common fault?

Also looking in the left hand rear little panel there is a load of black wires entering a white plug, is this for the addition for a tow bar?

The Genuine Park Distance Sytem is very expensive, you'd be better off buying an aftermarket kit and replacing the sensors you have with the ones from the kit.

You'd have to measure your existing holes and make sure that the aftermarket sensors weren't too small.

As your mirrors fold in and out, I would guess that the motors are OK.

The mirror switch signals an ECU which controls the feeds to the mirrors.

The symptoms you describe could be the result of a faulty switch, but is more likely to be a faulty ECU.

The "load of black wires entering a white plug" sounds like the Earth Header, there's one on each side behind the rear trims.

Here are some clearer pictures of the RH and LH side Earth Headers (shown with the rear side trims removed) -

The towing socket connector (for all 12N functions + Reverse Lights and Permanent Live for 12S) is behind the RH rear lamp -

Thanks PaulMc

Hmmm i shall look into the mirror side, its not a major problem but if its there i would like to be able to use it, i may take the switch out and give it a clean, it worked twice when i got it then failed to extend one morning.

The black wires into a single plug being a ground block dose make sense now thinking about it, considering all the other wires are colour coded and black is normaly ground

I asked around a few scrappies for the the bits for the sensors then looked on ebay and see sets on there for £20 so thats a no brainer just need to measure my holes.

And thanks for pointing out the loaction of the towbar electrics socket, very glad its not going to be a cut and splice job like my old pajero was just need to order the towbar and bits now but that can wait untill after payday.

I want to tow a horsebox, are the hight adjustable towbars (the slider one with the 2 pins to hold it in place) able to take that kind of strain? i assume they are or they wouldnt sell many but its worth asking all the same.

and again thanks for the assistance.

Parking Sensors:

Have a look at the links in my post in this thread -

I've also bought one of these kits (but I haven't got around to fitting it yet  ) -

Towbar:

I've got the Genuine Land Rover Height Adjustable Tow Bar, which is made by Dixon-Bate, and it's rated for towing 3500kg.

There are two types, one for vehicles with SLS (Air Suspension) STC50289AB, and another for vehicles with Coil Spring Suspension STC50287AB -

It uses one pin on the slider, although Dixon-Bate do make two pin sliders to fit -

thanks chap,

replaced the parking sensors now and they work a treat although i might have to put a switch in for when i fit a trailer, or just pull the plug off the buzzer each time.

ordered the towbar should be ready for fitting weekend.
